odd behavior

I work in a child care center.  We recently enrolled a 4 (almost 5) year old boy.  He screams in short loud bursts randomly.  pushes, kicks, hits other children seemingly out of the blue.  He repeats back everything you say to him and he is constantly digging in his feces after he has an accident in his pants.  He rarely engages in anything that resembles a conversation.  He often says he will hit his head against the wall.  We are very perplexed by this.  We have had some challenging children before, but never quite like this.  We NEED to help this family!  Can you give me a direction?  Does he display behaviors that are indicative of some disorder that you know of?

Bringing a professional is a good idea!

Issues may/may not come from home. Home situation has to be very difficult to "create" this type of issues.

There are some children born to addict parents, in and out of custody, have very few behavioral problems, while some born to well-to-do parents suffer from problems due to their brain chemistry/different wiring.....

Excellant that someone is coming to observe him, my experence tells me perhaps some issues come from home, however this is the way to go,to get some help for him, has he ever been to see his Doctor, regarding his behavior or havent the parents saidthat much to you.

I think parenting is only part of his issue.  You can watch him and know that it is something more.  The Mom seems to have given up.  She says "I know its me, I can't control him."  Dad seems to have a better handle on things, but not as much as he should.  We are giving the situation two weeks to get to know the family, then we are going to have to have a conference.  We will probably suggest that a professional come to observe him in the classroom.

I agree with you that the family could do with help as perhaps this is coming from home it is good you are trying to help him, have you spoken to the parents about his behavior, has he siblings you are aware of, something is upsetting him. Maybe suggest they take him first to his Doctor to have him checked out .
