Direct-to-Consumer Genetic Testing

Direct-to-Consumer Genetic Testing

When it’s done: During or even before pregnancy

You can now do some genetic tests at home, without your provider, using a kit sent to you through the mail. But there’s a catch, as not every testing company helps you understand the results, and most results aren’t a simple “yes” or “no” answer.

If you want to try direct-to-consumer genetic testing, talk with your provider or a genetic counselor first. Also ask your health insurance plan if they cover direct-to-consumer testing and a follow-up counseling session, which is recommended.
