Pain

Mar 22, 2012 - 2 comments

Want to go out for a walk, but my shins are soooo painful. Dad always dreamed of doing a thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail but his illness dashed those plans. In recent years, as I watched him battle neurological disease and cancer and seen his ability to fulfill his dream slip away, I've thought: "I'll do the Trail in his honor." How can I ever do a 2,174 mile trip---over mountains---when I'm left in crippling pain from a 1/2 mile stroll on flat land? :(

Took Luke for a walk. Wanted to go further & put in at least 30 minutes, but as soon as I started to walk the plantar fasciitis became unbearable. Had to limp home on one foot and tippy-toes of the other. Very frustrating as the pain had been better over the past couple of weeks with use of the new night splint I bought. The shoulder, however, is worse than ever and won't permit any upper body weight training. I miss exercise so much and so want to get back to it. These obstacles frustrate me.

Went to a free introductory exercise Bootcamp that my hair salon sponsored today. It was billed as "beginner", but it was brutal. A combo of aerobics & body weight resistance training: planks, push-ups, marching/jogging in place, squats, lunges, crunches & "V-ups", burpees*,"walkovers" (where you hold yourself in a plank or push-up position and "walk" your hands to one side then the other & back. I could only do 1/3 of what was asked...spent about 20 of the 45 minutes actually exercising, the other 25 panting & resting. I was humiliated to be so out of shape, especially in front of others who were quite fit. If I can figure out the finances, however, I will complete the 8 week, twice a week bootcamp. If it doesn't kill me, I should make a lot of fitness (and hopefully weight loss gains) by the end of the 8 weeks.

Exercise

Haven't been able to exercise due to pain in my back and all my muscles and joints (especially knees which keep "going out" when I'm climbing stairs). Also having contant pain in my R post-op shoulder; it especially hurts with trying to lift it above my head or move it forward & sometimes makes a popping/cracking sound/sensation. I've found it TERRIBLY frustrating not to be able to do anything physical. I want to find my inner athlete again & resume the active adventures I was enjoying. So, today I spent 1.5 hours in the pool. I stretched a lot and did "leg pull ups/ins", scissor kicks, shoulder rotations, arm fronts & sides without weights, squats, "leg lifts" and any other moves I could think of that might give me some benefit. My heart rate got up for short intervals off & on but not sustained so can't really call it "water aerobics"; will call it "stretching" for now though I think there was a little bit of aerobic and strength benefit. A little bit of benefit is better than sitting or lying down and getting none, right?
