ribavirin

Well, I took my last Ribavirin pill on the morning of the 13th to complete 24 weeks of treatment including 11 weeks on Telaprevir.  Last interferon injection was on the 6th.  Skin is ichy, lots of aches here and there, but I am thrilled to be done.  Awaiting results of the blood draw.  Last PCR was at week 16.  I'm still trying to remember that I don't have to take any more pills, etc.  My Ribavirin dose reduction took me down to 400 mg./day and every now and then I would take 600 mg/day just to keep those levels up, but when I did, there were noticable anemia effects a day or two later.  Seems it stayed in my serum longer than expected.  I hope the 400 mg. /day dose was enough to keep my undetectable.  Still trying to get my head around being done and sitting on pins and needle awaiting the test results.  Thank you everyone for your support along this very long road!  Much love was exchanged and I hope all of you are doing well!

Well, this past Wed. was the 16 week mark ... 5 weeks after stopping Telaprevir and many dose reductions of Ribavirin ... so getting my viral load check was unnerving.  Got the results yesterday from a slightly less sensitive test compared to Heptimax which Quest doesn't do anymore.  Result  <15IU/ml Not Detected.  I'm really happy and my anemia is abating a bit ... now hemoglobin is 10.1 up from 9.1 two weeks prior.  Doc reduced my riba to 400 mg/day, but now I can go and alternate between 400 and 600 per day.  This dose reduction made me nervous also, but my hemoglobin had gone down to 8.6 and I could barely walk.  Gonna play a little baseball tomorrow and probably sit out several innings, but I'll be in the game.

In the 12th week

renal impairment

My doc and I agreed to stop the telaprevir a week early, after 11 weeks.  Feeling a bit better.  One concern is my renal function.  eGFR is 53 and creatinine is 1.46.  He ordered an ultrasound of my kidneys.  I know some renal impairment is not unheard of... does anyone know if this is reversible once I stop taking the ribavirin?

Anyhow, rash is bad ... still tired.  Appetite has improved and I'm getting my 12 week PCR this Wednesday.  Keeping my fingers crossed.  Hope all is well with all my friends!

Oral

Just found out today that my 8 week Heptimax result was <5 ... i.e., undetectable.  Meds are causing more oral, gastro issues for me.  Reduced the ribavirin to 600 mg. per day.  Seeing the doc on Wed.  Wondering if the ribavirin will be increased a bit now or stay at 600 mg/day.  Meds are getting more difficult to tolerate ... at least they seem to be working!
