Another Abscess .. this really is getting old

Jul 29, 2009 - 9 comments

Woke up at 4 am and noticed an area on my abdomen, below the lowest of the four previous abscesses, that is the size of a pencil eraser.  Not too big yet, but definitely abscess .. and hurts.  Since I have been on antibiotics since the first week in May, this really should not be happening.  Decided to go to the ER, where they know what this is, and beat the 8 am rush.

The doctor who was the one who made the correct diagnosis, nocardiosis, is the one I was fortunate enough to see.  He sent me to the University of Iowa earlier this month and called them this morning to coordinate the care with the Infectious Disease docs there.  Nocardiosis of the skin is usually a secondary site .. with the lungs and then brain being primary.  So far, with tests completed, they believe I have a very rare primary skin nocardiosis ... that relates to my tummy surgery and the resulting seromas .. that through aspiration or spontaneous rupture allowed a path for the nocardia bacteria to enter.  It is very slow growing and very hard to eradicate and grows in all temperatures .. thus the long antibiotic therapy.

So .. long and short of it .. hot packs 4 x a day from now till Friday .. back to the hospital on Friday for a look see ... pain meds .. and we'll see if it turns into something that can be aspirated and recultured or whether it resolves.  Antibiotics continue and will now go a minimum of 9 months to a year with this "recurrence".

Will be on a little tomorrow and a little on Friday .. and hope to be back full-time on Saturday.

Regarding my little granddaughter, who has leukemia .. she is entering Phase IV of her treatment next week and I'll update you on that soon.  Please keep her in your prayers.

Love and Hugggssss ... and I really am trying to get better ..

Hi Ranae,

I'm glad you got to see the doctor that you've grown to trust and who has been so helpful with your case, but that's about the only thing in thing in this journal to be glad about!  Well, that and your SPIRIT!

I do hope this is just a bump and not a long detour in the road.  Keep us posted and pleas take good care of yourself.

So glad they are on top of the treatment.  You don't deserve this!!!!  Both Kalista and you are in my prayers.

I sure am glad I did a rare "log-on" today....I'm also glad I "stalk" Trudie!  I saw where she had commented on a journal, and something told me to go check it out.  I'm so thankful I did.

I am NOT glad you have another "hot-spot".  What a blessing that the same doctor was on the job.  I am amazed by that, as he seems to be a rarity.  It would seem to be rare for ANY doctor to recognize something of this ilk.

I pray that this has been caught early enough not to cause complications, or other spots to erupt.  I will pray for you!  I am painting and doing other stuff, so I am not on-line much, but I CAN think about and pray for my friend!

You take care.             HUGS !      (I read the update on Kalista....I'm praying for her, too!  I devour those updates on her.)

Well, I must confess - *I* was stalking both Trudie and twehner or I might have missed this journal as well....... ll

Ranae - I'm so sorry to hear that you have another of those spots, but am very thankful that you got the doctor who seems to be the most helpful.  I'm with twehner on that - he does seem to be a rarity - very few doctors are willing to take the time to dx things like that........ you are very lucky.

I'm still praying for Kalista as well.
