I'm a GREAT-Grandmother...And Happy!

Aug 05, 2009 - 11 comments

On Monday, August 3, my first born great-grandchild arrived.  His name is Nicholas James.  Born with a full head of red hair and big feet.  This child is from my first born son's, first born daughter, Jennifer.  Alot of "firsts."

Nicholas James was 8 pounds 4 ozs. and 21 inches long.  He has big feet to match.  I haven't had a chance to see him yet, as I live over a hundred miles away.  Throughout the pregnancy, my granddaughter had wanted to give him up for an open adoption to a childless couple.  She would not hold the baby after he was born.  It broke my heart.

I sent her flowers in a porcelain cartoon figure of a rubber ducky, with a message, to "Please hold your son and just cuddle him and feel his warmth.  You'll never regret it. I promise"  The nurses say that she started crying when she read my note and asked for the nurses to bring her the baby.  My granddaughter and I are very close.  I stood by her throughout the pregnancy, no matter what her final decision was.  Privately I prayed for her to have a change of heart.

So she held the baby for the first time and couldn't let him go.  Those God-given motherly instincts finally kicked in.  Thank you God for answered prayers.  Thank you to those that knew of this pregnancy, that said prayers for my great-grandson.

Today is a good day....I'm truly blessed.  So is Nicholas James.  He's one lucky little boy to have a mother like, Jennifer Rose....

Dear Heather,

What a great story! Had to go get a Kleenex after reading such great news!

Congratulations on your great grandson!  He's so lucky to have such an awesome great grandmother, and to have inherited his  g-grandmother's hair.   And, from  a fellow redhead, that makes him extra special, and I'm NOT talking about the bad temper myth.  :-)

Lots of congratulatory hugs!!!!!!!

Thanks to all of you for your sweet comments.  I hope to go see the little fella very soon.  No one has sent me any pictures as yet, so I am waiting with baited breath.

Have been through a box of Kleenex myself, when I heard the news that my granddaughter is keeping the baby.  She is 16 years old, 17 in a few days and having been pregnant myself at that age, I know it won't be an easy task raising a baby while being a teenager.  Makes one grow up quickly, that's for sure...

Again, all of you, thanks for your good wishes.  It means alot.  I have been a worried lady, wondering how the day of this birth would go and what would happen..

Hi Heather,

What a lovely thing to have happened, for you, your granddaughter and for the baby.  I too was in the same situation when I was 16 pregnant and not knowing what to do.  I was worried my Father wouldn't be happy about my bringing my Son home, so he too was put for adoption.  My Father came in the hospital to see me and said - and I quote verbatum
' you and your Son will be as welcome as the flowers in May'

The rest is history.

Congratulations Heather

This story is so touching! am young also and pregnant with my first baby. I am 19 years old but for awhile I thought about and seriously considered adoption. I decided after some time that I couldn't do it and I wanted to know my little girl. I'm so glad that she decided to keep her little boy. :)
