KIDNEY FAILURE

A recent NY Times article on the high incidence of kidney failure in body builders prompted me to be reminded that obstructive sleep apnea is also a known cause of kidney failure. The article reported on a study that showed that using anabolic steroids over a long period of time is associated with kidney damage. Looking back on past studies on sleep apnea and kidney disease, there are a number of papers that show a significant link between these two conditions. One article reported that the incidence of obstructive sleep apnea in dialysis patients ranges from anywhere from 50 to 90%!

I was also reminded of a comment that a body builder friend of mine made to me a while ago. She stated that almost every one of her friends and fellow body builders in her gym snore heavily. My suspicion is that extreme neck muscle enlargement presses on the upper airway. As their sleep quality worsens, they have to work out harder and more often to feel energetic. Building up more bulk only adds to the problem.

Do you know any body builders or very muscular people who may have a sleep-breathing problem? Please enter your response in the box below.
