Out With The Old...In With The New

Jan 07, 2010 - 5 comments

Today I ordered new nursery furniture. My old crib was one of the Stork Kraft that had been recalled so instead of getting the replacement parts DH and I decided just to get a new one. Now, since the old crib was white, so was the rest of the nursery furniture and I just purchased a cherry wood crib. :) I actually called DH at work and told him that we need to buy all new things (dresser, changing table ect...) so they will match. I was thinking he was going to fight me on it as all the stuff we have is in mint condition, but surprise, surprise, he DIDN'T. He actually said to go ahead and get what I wanted....I was speechless!!!! After some thought I decided that I would donate the old furniture to an organization in my town that gives away baby things to those who need it. I can't, in good conscience, give the crib away as I don't think it is safe for my own child and would never risk another person's child, but the rest of it is going tomorrow. The organization said they would come pick it up.The furniture I ordered, crib, dresser, changing table, and rocking chair (all cherry wood) will be delivered in three weeks. Now all I have to do is pick my colors and theme for the nursery. :) Anyone have any good ideas?

Victoria, you have just given someone a beautiful gift.  I think you know that's what I do for a with those living in poverty and homelessness, and I can tell you that baby furniture and items are so in demand and need.  Also, to hear you say that you would not donate something in bad shape or unsafe warms my heart even further.  Many mean well, but donate junk and think that these families should be grateful...some actually get quite upset when we have to reject it.  You did a wonderful thing!!!

As for themes, there are so many cute ones out there.  I am an animal lover so I went with a "Safari" theme.  My nursery furniture is that really really dark wood (almost black really) and I used soft greens and yellows with giraffes, monkeys, etc. embroidered on them.  I really like the way it turned out.

Good luck, decorating the nursery is sooo much fun!!!

I agree----  kudos to you for giving another family the gift of nice things for their baby while still protecting them.

Oh, the excitement of a new baby!!!!!  I wanted more than two children but it wasn't meant to be for me and realized this about a year ago.  I probably knew it ahead of time but just admitted it to myself.  Still get a little melancholy over it.  But love the excitment of others . . .

Do you  know the sex of your baby to come?  I too went with animals.  My furniture was white but also went with a soft green room.  Nice and soothing, right? . . . Good luck with the decision making process------  such fun!!

Thank you so much, ladies! Your words and opinions mean a lot to me.

I have thought about greens/yellows to go with the dark wood, though haven't really looked into the actual designs yet, though I do like the animal idea.

specialmom - Yep, baby is a boy! :)

Oh, I love baby boys  . . . I went with a light blue for my second boy and his theme was race cars.  It had bright red infused in it too and was really fun!!!  It has carried over now that he is a bit older too.  My boy that I decorated with animals . . . has moved onto sports.  But he still has his monkey and giraffe light!

What a fun time in your life!!  Enjoy.
