Exercise and weight loss

I'm so glad I found this site to try to help me to understand what is going on with my body.  Now 48 years old, I'm struggling with my weight for the first time in my life and have never had trouble losing weight before.  Unfortunately, my weight has been up and down like a yo-yo my entire life, but I have never weighed this much before.  I have gained 35 lbs. in the last 2 years and now no matter what I do, it's not coming off.  I used to just be able to go on a calorie restriction and I'd slim down in no time, but now, nothing.  At first I attributed it to my partial hysterectomy I had in 2005, but this cannot be totally hormonal.  

Six months ago I decided to begin making major changes in my lifestyle.  I began going to the gym 5 days a week and started by walking/running on the treadmill for a total of 40 minutes, followed by a 10 minute session on the elliptical trainer.  I really thought adding this much activity would help me shed these pounds.  Two months later, seeing NO results, I decided to add 2lb. dumbbells into my walking activity.  I warm up for 5 minutes, then pick up the weights and at 4 mph I walk briskly and do all sorts of arm movements.  I then moved up the 3 lb. weights.  No here I am....six months later still doing these activities 4-5 days a week and I haven't lost a pound!  Not a single one.

To top it all off, I have changed my diet.  I have NEVER been a big sugar eater and have always liked to eat healthy foods, but I gave up white flour and switched to whole grains, including sprouted bread, barley and brown rice.  I've added high fiber cereal for breakfast, and keep a fruit basket on my table so I have access to fresh fruits and I love all veggies.  I do eat meats, beef, chicken, turkey, occasional pork, tilapia and salmon.  I have never been a fan of soda so for the last several years my main beverage is water, followed by 10 calorie vitamin water and tea, with an occasional coffee or alcoholic beverage such as wine or a mixed drink.

I've done some calorie/exercise tracking before and the results indicate that I should be burning off way more than I'm eating, because I've put in everything I ate and tracked all my activity and even though I was eating around 1700 calories per day, the pounds haven't budged.  I'm frustrated and discouraged that I'm doing all this hard work, sweating and trying so hard and getting no results.  

I'm hoping that I'll be able to find some answers on this site.  The next step for me is to see a doctor to see if there is any medical reason why this is so.  I'm hoping there have been others that have experienced the same journey and have found answers so I can be advised of what to do before I give up hope all together.
