WEEK (INSERT # HERE): CONTRACTIONS AND THINGS

Jul 12, 2010 - 5 comments

Hello all!! So my u/s appt is this week, thurs to be exact and i can find out if i'm just measuring early, i got a huge baby, or was he in a weird position. I was thinking the other day: how can you tell if the baby's feet are kicking you or is it their hands punching you? Lol. I'm always making him move something but i don't know if he shies away when i touch his feet or hands. The weird things i think about, maybe there is a way to distinct it but i can't tell. Can someone breakdown EXACTLY what do contractions feel like? I used to feel a tightening that would come out of nowhere but i haven't felt that. Last night i felt like a really bad menstral cramp in my pelvic area, it wasn't the tightening feeling i've had from the ones when i was about 20+ weeks but i was taking out my trash and it made me stop in my tracks? Would that be considered one? I'm so afraid that i'll be in labor and have no idea what it is going on or i'll blow off an contraction and it'll be too late. My other question is did everyone go through the "nesting" stage (i think that's what it's called) and clean their house in preparation? I am too tired to clean clean! I barely have enough energy to walk the dog. Is that a good sign that i won't be going into labor early? I feel so slow with all my thoughts and not knowing this or that. If i ever get to baby #2 i'll be way more ready lol.

Hi Treniece! The tightening that you describe sounds like braxton hicks. Real contractions are stronger and usually reach all the way around to the small of your back. They will keep getting stronger and closer together. I wouldn't worry too much, your first baby usually takes quite awhile so you'll figure out what's going on before it's too late. As for nesting, I did experience it with my other kids but this time around I keep waiting for it but I just feel more and more tired as it gets closer. So, I don't know. Maybe it doesn't always happen. Oh, and I have no idea what baby parts I'm feeling either. The baby is head down so sometimes I think I'm feeling his rear end, and I assume is feet and knees are jabbing me up top. Good Luck with your u/s!

Like Karen said the tightening is most likely just Braxton Hicks. If they were true contractions they would definitely be more uncomfortable. they would also come in a pattern almost predictable though not exact and would last for at least 30 seconds to a minute. Believe me you will know when a real one hits you. I have a high tolerance for pain and have always had really bad menstral cramps with my period to the point of being doubled over. So my docs told me if I even feel a slight bit of it the let them know because with my tolerance I could got into full fledged labor and full dialated and not think anything about it. But I would say any pain that worries you, go with your gut instinct, ER's and OB's are used to the paranoid first time mother. Don't worry you will know when its time.

Thanks so much ladies for the advice!! I keep trying to force myself to "nest" but it's not working. I'll tell myself over and over "i need to clean" and it does not work that way. I just want to sleep! I haven't even washed his clothes yet. Is it necessary to wash their clothes and things?

Believe me you will know once you're in labor and you will not be able to blow off contractions. LOL However everything you mentioned is a normal fear of a first time mommy. The day I actually went into labor with my daughter I had my friend come over and we were cleaning the whole house. Well I cleaned my room while she cleaned the whole house lol and after we were finished I asked her to look over my hospital bag. Just as I took everything out the bag I stood up to go to the bathroom and my water broke. When your nesting time come you won't have to force yourself.

I would say that it is necessary to wash the clothes and have them ready. Some ppl say don't yet because you don't know how big ur baby will be however you might not have time once you get home. Things are going to be crazy as it is you won't want to wash clothes.

You have an excited few weeks a head of you.
