Our Charge--
--------God in his wisdom has selected this group of men and women to be the purveyors of his goodness. In selecting them through whom to bring this phenomenon, he went not to the proud, the mighty the famous or the brilliant. He went to the humble, the sick, to the unfortunate. He went right to the drunkard, the so-called weakling of the world. Well might he have said to us into your weak and feeble hands I have entrusted a power beyond estimate- to you have been given that which has been denied the most learned of your fellows. Not to scientist or to statesman, not to wives or to mothers not even to my priest or minister’s, have I given a gift of healing other alcoholics, which I entrusted to you. It must be used unselfishly. It carries with it great responsibility, no day can be too long ,no demand upon your time can be too urgent ,no case to pitiful no tasks too hard to let for two great. It must be used with tolerance for I purposely restricted its application to no race, no creed, no religion or denomination. Personal criticism, you must expect. Lack of appreciation will be common -- ridicule will be your lot. Your motives will be misjudged. Success will not always attend to your efforts in your work with other alcoholics. Be prepared for adversity -- for what people call adversity is the ladder for
which you much use to ascend the wrongs toward spiritual perfection. Now remember in the exercise of this power, I shall not expect of you, anything beyond your capability. You're not selected because an exceptional talents, and be careful always, if success attends your efforts not to subscribe to personal superiority that to which you can lay claim only by virtue of my gift. If I had wanted learned people to accomplish this mission, the power would have been entrusted to the physician or to the scientist. If I had wanted eloquent people, there would have been many anxious for the assignment for talk is the easiest used of all talents with which I have endowed humankind. If I had wanted scholarly people this world is filled with better qualified people than you -- who would have been available. You were selected because you have been the outcast of the world and your lonely experience as drunkards has made you or should make you humbly alert to the cries and distress that come from the lonely hearts of alcoholics everywhere. Keep ever in mind the mission you made on the day of your entrance in to recovery. That you are in fact powerless, and it was only with your willingness to turn your life and your will into God's keeping, that release finally came to you. My friend that
mission is ours. We have been released from the bondage of addiction into the hands of Almighty God. So long as we stay fit, spiritually as a result of working with others and cleaning house. We’ve been given the daily reprieve contingent on the maintenance of our spiritual condition. So long as we stay fit. We have nothing to fear…
My friends, I would love to claim originality of this I write to you today -- for it has impressed upon me the importance of our duty as recovering individuals on a day-to-day basis. St. Francis said “preach the gospel all day long -- and if you must use words”. The spiritual life is not a theory. We must live it! We have sprung from the depths of hell into the arms of a loving and living God -- for faith without works is dead, and faith increases when the evidence of God Almighty, is on the face of the newcomer who walks in the room with gravel in their knees and tears in their eyes, from the pain caused by a fatal and punitive disease of alcoholism and addiction. You all told me, do not regret the past or shut the door on it .The third step, prayer in Alcoholics Anonymous bluebook states, “help me to overcome my difficulties. So that victory over them may bear witness to those I would help, of Thy, thy love, and Thy way of life. So it is been told to me over the past
almost 3 years of sobriety especially by my mother --. It is in the valleys that we grow, and why we grow, we learn to rely upon a power of which I call God versus unhealthy dependency upon humans. I firmly believe that the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous/NA is used as a tool to chisel down the garbage we have created –which blocks us off from our creator. Upon completion of the 12 steps and we are awake spiritually as the result- we now have a program of action that will enable us to remain sober and happy and free, as long as we stay out of the way, recognize the power of God's hands, and remain not in yesterday, not it tomorrow -- but in the present moment, the here and now, where our Divine Creator resides. The essence of NA/ Alcoholics Anonymous in my opinion, is about getting out of the way, realizing that I'm not the only person on this earth, and dying to self -- which inevitably creates more room for him in my soul! I hereby on the 20th day of November the year of our Lord 2007, dedicate this to alcoholic or nonalcoholic friends, family and associates -- to the families torn by addiction, to those who have not made it into the rooms and are still consumed by the painstaking consequences of the deadly disease of addiction. This is written in loving memory and honor of all who have gone before me, all who are here, and
all that have yet to come. May you rest in perfect peace and ease of our, by knowing that He comes to all who are in a position of receptiveness, and teachable -- It's all about Grace... Not about me!
Love in the fellowship-One day at a Time-
