Leg Edema

Apr 22, 2011 - 10 comments

I decided to just do a journal about this because I seem to not ask my questions right in the forum and usually they get bypassed. I know that I have asked others on here if they have swelling in their legs from possibly low Vit D or is this just a side effect of hypothyroidism or what. I am really starting to get concerned about it. Now I am starting to feel like I am swelling all over sometimes. Even the other night I had this strange sensation like my brain was swelling. I checked my blood pressure and it was elevated for me 148/100. I have been three times to my GP and showed them my legs. I have pitted edema in them. I dont get any answers. Tonight I became really scared , I was lying on my bed and My hip started hurting and I looked down and the top of my foot had this large black and blue bruising all on it. In about 10 mins it completely went away. I dont know what is going on with my circulation. I recently about a month ago had all kinds of blood test done by my Endo. She checked everything in my blood because I complained to her how my bones and joints hurt and about the swelling. She said she was gonna make sure there wasnt some sort of imflammation going on. Only thing she said was low Vit D and that I was slightly hyper. Lowered my levo. If anyone reads this and has the slightest clue as to what could be up with my circulation and bone and joint pain please let me know. It seems to be getting worse but I cant seem to get the docs to care. Maybe I need a Rheumatologist?  Anyway,, just another thing in the life of a chronic thyroid person.

This is for my own self notes. Just to keep track with what the doctors say and do. So, finally got a call back from the Endo. Told them about how sick I get taking the Vit D and about how the top of my foot turned black last night. The nurse said she told me to tell you to stop taking the vit D. I told her ok does she think I am having some sort of reaction to it or something? Nurse said No. That was that. So , Ill just wait until next time if my leg turns black Ill just go to the ER and see if anyone can tell me what the heck is up. Ok called my GP and going in to see his dumb @ss again about my bone, jointpain and swelling in the legs and I wil show him the small bruise left from where my foot turned black last night. This will be the 4th trip to him, which im sure will be another waste of time. I am only going because my son insists. He is worried. I feel bad about calling the doctor that but then again I am completelly dumbfounded as to why the healthcare has declined so much. I am sure he will refer me on to someone else. I am tired of refferals to others and then wait months to get in and then get no answers there either.

Is it just above the shins?  I found this "This may also be indicative of a lymphatic system disorder or hyperthyroidism, where swelling develops just above the shin" explaining the swelling.

I also did some research and the swelling is more likely due to the thyroid than the parathyroids. I'd still love to know what your calcium and pth are running though since you can't tolerate the D.  I know I have found several people however that cannot take D (and all these people have been hyper, so maybe it has to do with being hyper although the doctors will tell you this is not the case).  I hate when docs just leave you hanging.  Definitely go to the ER.  Heck I was even thinking about going to MAYO clinic one day if I don't find help lol.  I hope you can find a good doc to help you, but sadly I don't even think they exist anymore.  As always, you are in my prayers.

Thanks Danie for the input. it is mostly in my shins and ankles and feet. I went to the GP today because the Endo said to just go to him. He is doing a doppler next week to check out circulation. I am sooo sick of this crap. I just feel like my life is falling apart. Im so tired of these thyroid issues and now this crap. The doctor said could be rheumatiod arthritis, fibromalgia, PAD ... who knows. It seems like over this last year I have just had so many things to happen with my health. Thanks for the prayers and as always you are in mine too!

I hope they find out something.  What a nightmare.  You've had to go through so much lately.  Lets pray the doppler will tell you something and hopefully it will not be another bad thing added on to the thyroid..

Thank you both. I am really starting to feel like a hypochondriac but my son was the one who actually made me go to the doctor today. My legs hurt so bad that I am eating pain pills like crazy and no relief. Geez, I know I am getting up in years but at 48 I shouldnt feel this bad. I have those times though when I go sometimes for a good stretch and think oh thank God Im getting some better and then Bam something else starts. Good health to both of you and thanks.

You're not a hypochondriac, your leg wouldnt be sore, swollen and bruised for no reason. It is frustrating. I was only saying yesterday that I'm 20 years old but feel 120 somedays! Lets just hope and pray they can find out what it is! I'll keep you in my prayers.

Hessy, I have the same type of swelling, but I do not bruise.  Yours is strange that it gets bruised and then goes away.  And I feel your pain.  Dr's appts and referrals, BLAH<BLAH<BLAH!!!  I hate this stuff.  And we feel badly to go to our drs!!  What are they there for!  If they are stumped, why don't they just say so, instead of leaving us questioning our sanity.  They are supposed to have the answers, but it is ok if they don't, Just SAY so.   Have you found any answers yet?  Sorry I am just now responding.

I also know how you feel on posting.  I try but it seems only my friends respond anymore.  I think I am doing it wrong!

Try to hang in there and we can all join up in the same boat, at least we can take turns paddling!            sass

If the doppler doesn't show anything ask for a referral to a rheumatologist.  And insist that they rule out fibromyalgia - some of them just consider it a nuisance.

Thanks Trudie I will do that. My GP did mention Fibro and Rheumatiod arthritis. I can just add another doctor to my resume.
