Well, we've passed 14th anniversary of Med Help which was founded in December, 1993. So much has happened over the years since Cindy and I founded the company that it's impossible to capture it in a few scant words.
For those of you with a technical bent MedHelp was born out of spare computer parts in a garage. The "system" was comprised of an old 286 computer with 2 modems running DOS and some commercial bulletin board software from a company call Galacticomm. The phone company was nice enough to run 2 lines into the garage and by April 1, 1994 MedHelp was born.
I don't recall exactly how we managed to let the world know that we existed, most of it was word of mouth at the time and there were a few books out detailing the world of online. It's amusing now looking back that one could publish a 300 page book listing every online resource. The Internet was in it's early formative years, but, we along with a handful of other medical-type organizations were the only ones online at the time and the modems would pick up perhaps a half dozen calls per day.
After launch our main efforts centered about building content. As the content grew so did our following. It amazed us that we received dial-ins from as far away as eastern Russia and parts of Africa. Medical information in lay terminology was scarce and we were indeed ambitious!
Some point in the mid 90's.. perhaps 1996 I believe, we switched out hardware and software. Jumping up to a dedicated speedy 56K line to an ISP and onto the Net (specifically the Web) with Windows NT. Thank goodness for local dialup with flat rate billing from the phone company! lol
So at age 14 we are now grown up, we've grown from a few visitors per week to millions of visitors per month. We've grown from an old 286 in a garage to a set of dedicated servers scattered about the country with blazingly fast Net connections. The original content offered grew from dozens of pages to hundreds of thousands of pages and of course MedHelp as a company has grown commensurately!
Thank you... without your support....... none of this would be possible.
