what to expect first therpay session?

Jun 29, 2011 - 7 comments

so i made a appt with a therapist. i think im having some anxiety issues.

my health has been a roller coaster lately, the ENT says its allerigues making me lightheaded. but it seems to be ALL i can think about now. i will find myself on the computer for 8-10 hours a day just looking up symptoms and stuff like that.

i got sweaty palms, i get dizzy, feel nervous, get a tingle in my face, very nervous stomach .........i have self medicated myself the past 2 days with a half of a xanax, which made me  a totally different person. i was happy, i could eat i felt normal

i dont want to be on pills for the rest of my life, so i guess thats why i made appt with a therapist and see what he has to say. im kinda nervous about that as well though, even today i saw my GP and talked to her about it and i cried for the first few mins i was telling her about thinking i have anxiety.

what should i expect from this therapy session tomorrow? i know im going to cry, cause im a cry baby when i get nervous or scared, or embarrassed.

does anxiety last for a life time?.......i never had this before and its so frustrating.

would love to hear from someone with anxiety or someone who has been in therapy for it, or just anyone with some advise......

tomorrow at 11 is the big day!.....also going to see a neuro-otologist tomorrow afternoon to double check this dizziness

Noooo, do not mix the alcohol and Xanax, please!  I've had a lot of anxiety - but yet again you know some of what's went on and who wouldn't lol.  When I get attacks, my throat starts to close up it feels like way down in my esophogus (sp?) and it travels up and feels so painful in my chest.  I don't get the sweaty palms or anything like that.  I need to get myself in to see somebody also, it's been awhile and I've just been kinda coasting.  I think this will be a great thing for you!  Good luck with the appointment tomorrow too, or is that today lol   :)

I`m in therapy for anxiety as well.  My first session they had me fill out some questionarres based on how I feel around certain circumstances, etc.  We talked a lot about symptoms and talked about how I felt about medications, etc.  It was kind of a get to know you session I guess.  I did choose to combine therapy with meds because in my case the anxiety had pretty much taken over my life.  After that session we worked on different things.  Trying to get to the core of what had started this (for me it was post partum onset, but had always been there, just got unmanagable after my son was born) and worked a lot on coping strategies and strategies to help me work my way through the panic attacks.  I have to say good for you in taking matters into your own hands to work on this.  It takes a lot of strength, and you are taking a positive step forward.  Good luck!

awww One thing I know after an operation which lets face it is a trauma ..you can have anxiety I think very often its a temorary thing , and may disappear in a few weeks when you are stronger. You went through a lot ..surgery is a trauma your body is healing, a bit of therapy will be okay ,not certain you need any anxiety  drugs but I am sure you will know whats best for you ..
