SA Analysis.Any Suggestions? Please Read

Dec 05, 2011 - 25 comments

Well we got the results of DF's S.A. They said his count is a little low. That was a little disappointing to hear.

But we're going to pick up another requistion form so we can do it again. We didn't get a great sample when we did it because he was nervous about it doing in the first place.

So if that is indeed the case, does anyone have any suggestions on how we can bring up the sperm count? And do it naturally. He's not one for taking medications.

I know women can still get pregnant with a low sperm count, but can make it a little more difficult.

So maybe this is the explanation why we're having a hard time TTC. I know DF is going to take this news hard, cause now he'll be thinking it's his fault why we can't conceive.

Does anyone have any suggestions for this as well? I don't know how I'll be able to reassure him that it's not his fault

Me an my DF TTC for 20 months before we got our BFP, and he had very low sperm and quality. He started taking vitamin c and zinc tablets, and within 2 months I was pregnant completely naturally! Just be patient, it'll happen :)

Make sure he wears boxers instead of briefs. That is one thing our doctor told us.

Louise, is that something you can find OTC? Is it one for each? Or is it like a multivitamin?

Marlene, he wears a boxer brief usually. But he's always worn them. Even when we conceived our son 6 years ago.

Does age play a factor in sperm count? He is 47, so I was wondering if that would affect it...

Thanks for your suggestions ladies

Our RE told us that my DH should avoid saunas and hot tubs (he doesn't have low sperm count, but they said that saunas and hot tubs can make it harder to conceive).
Sorry, that's all I know.
Our RE told us that being in your 40s shouldn't affect sperm count.
Good Luck!

Yes shannon totally OTC, you could probably find a mens fertility multivitamin with them in, plus extra's, or you could buy seperately, which my DF did! He took one of each everyday, I can't say they helped with the BFP because he only had his SA done before taking them, so not sure they improved his sperm in 2 months! But definately worth a shot! Also, DH should avoid hot baths before BD and avoid sitting for long periods of time.. :)

Men's age really doesn't affect their sperm count - think of Rod Stewart LOL.

Vitamin C and Zinc can just be bought in a supermarket or a pharamacy. They're pretty widely used vitamins so they're easy enough to find. He should take one of each a day - just like you would a multivitamin.

Make sure you guys aren't BDing every day either, make sure you're leaving it every other day to build up a good sperm count. Apart from that, as long as he's eating healthily, doesn't smoke (smoking plays a big factor in sperm) doesn't drink too much or take drugs and taking the vitamins then that's about all you can do.

Wake, we don't use hot tubs or saunas. But he does like a pretty warm bubble bath. So that's one thing that he may have to cut out.

Louise, I'll have to check for those when I'm out and about. Unfortunately he does sit a lot cause he's a courier, so he does a lot of driving. But he's had that job longer then I've known him.

Kitkat, LOL yes Rod Stewart is a good example. Aww man he's not gonna like the news that we can't BD every day. HAHA. He does smoke, but again one of those things he's done longer then I've known him. No drugs of any kind. Heck, he hardly ever takes even a Tylenol for a headache. He can't even take a tylenol without it affecting him. Even 1 tylenol makes him drowzy.

These are some great suggestions :)

Hansen, I've heard about that Fertility Aid, but I've never tried it. I wonder if it really works. Might be something to try out.

Him smoking really would be the main reason (if all else is perfectly healthy) for low sperm counts. I've read studies that men who smoked for years had a low sperm count, and then after cutting back for a couple months and gradually quitting their levels went really high! So it could definitely be worth looking into getting him to go on some kind of nicotine replacement therapy. Even just cutting back at first, it will make a difference.

hehe my DF is the same. He even hates taking antibiotics if he needs to in case they do anything to him! Men are just weird with that kind of thing!

Kitkat, he's smoked for years. We have a 6 year old son together, and he has 3 kids from his previous marriage. So maybe it's a combination of age and smoking....Or something. Ugh I dunno.

Maybe when we do this 2nd S.A., it will be better news. The first one wasn't an ideal sample. It was a very small amount. He was really nervous about doing it in the first place, so maybe that had an effect on it.

I will definitely make some of these suggestions to him

My dh took maca root and a multivitamin. We hadn't had a SA but we read that maca works both for men and women.

"Peru's Maca root is a hormonal nourishing food for increasing male fertility. Maca nourishes glands and helps men with natural production of testosterone hormones to increase sperm production and fertility.

This herbal supplement for increasing male fertility works in an entirely different and more satisfactory way than hormone drugs. It improves optimal functioning of the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland, therefore a better functioning of all the endocrine system responsible of producing hormones for sperm natural production and male fertility.

As men age, they make less of the male hormone called testosterone. This usually causes less sperm to be made. Decreased testosterone production also causes symptoms like: decrease in sex drive, infertility and weakness.

Maca increases testosterone levels in men and improves semen and sperm production for fertility. Whenever sexual appetite is stimulated, male's body will react with a proper erectile response to have more ejaculations with a better performance."

My husband says it gives him overall better energy. He loves it and continues to take it even after we are pregnant. I think it's done well for him.

L-Arginine is another thing that's supposed to help. But it might be more convenient to buy one thing that has everything in it to help sperm count. I know of one supplement called Fertil-Aid for Men. It's like $30.00 for a one month supply, but from what I hear, it works really, really well! Then he would only have to take one thing. Maybe you could take the Fertil-Aid for Women so it could be like you're doing it together. (So it's not like something that just HE has to take since HE is the problem. Much better to avoid having him feel that way, I think!) :-) Good luck!!!

Well MeYeah, I'll admit there's no issues with the sex drive. *ahem*

Where can you find Maca Root?

Sherri, I've heard about the Fertil Aid. Have your or your hubby used it? Does it work?

I'm at the point where I'll try almost anything. But I do want to approach the subject of Fertil Aid to him carefully, because like you said I don't want to point fingers at him and make him feel like it's his fault that we're having a hard time conceiving.

I just find it difficult to understand why we conceived our son with no problem 6 years ago. The only thing that's really changed since then is his stress level. And I've heard that can play a big role. So he's trying to reduce his stress level. (Easier said then done.....)

Hey Shannon,

I wouldn't worry too much unless the counts were SUPER low. Did they give you a number? "low counts" can be so reletaive from RE to RE. Plus he needs to abstain for at minimum 24 hrs before the sample is given (2 days is better). Being nervous in that sample room can make all the difference in the world! Next time see if they will allow him to do it at home and drop it off (I'm assuming he went in to give sample?).

The fact that he has a healthy appetite for sex indicates his testosterone levels are fine which is HUGE. To me it seems that this test was kind of flukey.... I wouldn't make any changes other than a quality multivitamin unless you get another SA  with similar results.

Try not to stress.... The last thing you need is more pressure!

Hugs!

Cher

I have heard that it TOTALLY works. It would have to since it has all (most) of the things that people say is good for sperm count (Arginine, zinc, maca, and so on). I actually don't remember everything that was in it but I do remember it had like a dozen or so ingredients. We haven't used it yet. Never actually had a SA yet. We should do one on the next cycle. Keep us posted on what you try, how it works, etc. Good luck!!!

No she didn't give me a number. Didn't even give any indication of motility or anything.

We actually did come home to do the sample then quickly ran it up to be tested. But it was still very nervewracking for him. So it definitely was not an "ideal" sample.

If memory serves me correctly, it had been at least 24 hours. I think closer to 2 days.

It can be very stressful, so I'm really trying to help him with that aspect so it's a little easier for him.

Thanks Cher

Hugs

Think we may have to get some Fertil Aid. Sounds like it could definitely be worth it.

You asked where to find Maca Root, vitacost.com sells it for around $6 and they also sell lots of other good vitamins for a low cost.
