early scan?

Jan 19, 2012 - 18 comments

So when I called the doctor yesterday and told him about my last period and mentioned how light and strange and it and how it only lasted for a couple of days he seemed to think that he should date me from my period in November - making me 6-7 weeks.

I don't think I am that far along though, because since then and now I have tested (not with fmu, but still I reckon if I were that far along it would have shower regardless) and have tested negative. Obviously I need to wait till my first antenatal appointment anyway to know more.

I'm thinking about booking an early scan though, for when (I think) I would be around 8 weeks. Just  for piece of mind. Everything goes very slowly here with the NHS and so I know I'll be waiting at least another month just to here when me appointment is, then even longer for the actual appointment so a scan in between then is sounding pretty attractive.

I've still to run it by DF, but I don't see him having a problem with it. The scan costs £100 though. Which is a lot of money considering I only work part time. But you pay a £39 deposit, then the rest at the appointment so that breaks it up a little.

What do you ladies think? Is it a waste of money and should I just wait for the 12 week? Or should I go ahead and have it done? Seems worth it for my sanity - especially after the chemical last year I am a little anxious. I know it's still early, and not everyone gets symptoms but the fact I'm not getting any obvious ones isn't helping with my worrying!

If you can get the money and it won't hurt you guys, I would probably book it for 8 weeks as well. It will show you how everything is progressing and you'll have a better idea of how far along you are.

Yeah. With both our salaries it's not too bad and I think it would definitely be worth it just to put me at ease. Turning into such a worry wort now lol. At least then, I would only need to wait another 3/4 weeks instead of the months I would be waiting going the NHS route.

U r correct  about how far along u are!!!!  Even using smu at 60 days u should get a +. U got a neg. it makes since to me. Plus since the dr has u a full 4 weeks ahead of schedule because he is using the previous period it would put your 12 according to him and 8 wks according to u at the same time.

November 16th is the date he is using. 30 days( 4 weeks 2 days) plus this cycle 35 days (5 weeks): putting u at 9 weeks 2 days.  making your scan in 3 weeks.

December 16th is the date u are using.  putting u at 5 weeks

GL Let us know how it goes.

Honestly And this is just my opinion I would not do a early scan before 8 weeks because everything is so scensitive down there and could cause bleeding . But If you do it around 8 to 9 weeks I think its more safe . :)

Retta they don't always have to do an internal scan, mine was done on my abdomen, so that won't cause bleeding at all.

See I would wait till around then. They dates I was looking at booking were around Feb 16th or the week after. I just don't want to have to wait till my 12 week scan to know everything is okay. Even with the antenatal appointments - they're only every 3 or so weeks and just blood tests etc. I'm just afraid of a missed miscarriage because of the chemical I had last year.

@Retta - I'll be waiting till I'm past 8 weeks anyway!

@Margy - I don't mind which sex the baby is. But with mine and Scott's family being so male dominated (I have 4 brothers and he has 3 brothers and 5 nephews) then boys do seem to take over lol

I say go for it too!!  Partly because you're anxious and it would help ease your mind and partly because WE are anxious and can't wait!! :D
Ahh at the boys!! That's what's on hubby's side as well.  He has 4 brothers and a sister.  All of their kids are boys.  Makes a girl wonder! :)  Anyways, whatever you choose I wish you the best!! :)

its so hard.. i had to wait until 12 weeks for both mine.. 2nd time around killed me but it was such a relief to go in see a baby and a hb... i wouldnt be able to handle going in seeing a sac,etc... at least you are being smart about it and waiting until 8 weeks so hopefully u wont have to do multiples..

part of me is glad though that they make you wait until 12 weeks but at the same time getting through that time was so hard and i cried alot thinking things werent good and it might have been different if i could have got a scan at 8 weeks

I had a dating u/s at about 8 weeks because my cycle was irregular and it was just the most awesome thing to see! Just seeing that tiny little bean on the screen and seeing the heartbeat, and getting an official EDD just makes things so much more real! And like you said, it'll put your mind at ease so totally worth it!

@nic374 - here in the UK we have the NHS (national health service) so treatments etc are all free adn scans are offered at 12 and 20 weeks unless you're considered a high risk but with my previous chemical pregnancy I'm just so nervous. I'm also really nervous about a missed miscarriage and I don't want to wait till 12 weeks and get excited about me scan and to go and there is nothing there - that would kill me. I would rather know sooner than baby is okay for now. It'll keep me going till the next 4-6 weeks till I get my proper NHS scan.

I'll see how next week goes but I just cannot see me being able to make it to 12 weeks when time is going by this slowly - I'll drive myself crazy. Then again the doctor might arrange one since we have different opinions on how far along I am lol. But I'm always right :P so I know he's wrong LOL

so really with the way the dr has u/ your date  he  says ur 12 wks which would be your free one while u know u r really only 8 weeks. then because the baby measures small he  might move u to high risk making it to where u can get at least one extra one.

Doctor seems to thing - just guessing that I'm 6-7 weeks because I had a weird/practically non-existant period in December. But I tested back then and got a negative so I know I'm not that far along - I'm 4 weeks 4days. But if he thinks I'm further along then I might just let him if it'll hurry my scan along! If not, then I'll most likely go for the private one at about 8 weeks and then get my 'first' one at 12 weeks like normal.

I just had my first ultrasound yeterday at 7 wks 2 dys.  It was such a releif to see the heartbeat!  After the miscarriage I had last year, I was REALLY nervous with this pregnancy.  So far I haven't had any bleeding or spotting from the exam and it was an internal one.  I would say if you can scrape the money together, go for it! Piece of mind is worth 100.
