IVF DONOR CYCLE

Jan 24, 2012 - 30 comments

I'm having a really hard time deciding on a program to go with. It seems I cannot get a real price out of these people!! I'm considering just going with the donor embie program at California Conceptions... $9800 for up to three cycles with 2 embies transfered each time. They use completely anonymous male and female donors to create a 'designer embie' so to speak. This is all so strange and overwhelming... I just don't know what to do!!

Finding a donor program that is the right fit can be overwhelming.  Just look at all of your options and you will know when the right program comes along.  It's a tough decision to go with donor, but I can promise you this, you will not regret it.  Just look at all the programs you can find in your area (or even outside).  Make sure they answer all of your questions that you are satisfied with.  It takes some research and time, but with TTC, everything takes time. xoxo Joann

Thanks Joann. It just seems they keep sneaking all these costs in the mix. First they say it's around 20k then they break it down like this:

$13,565.00  -baseline fees

$6813.00    -3rd party coordinator fees

$6500.00   -donor compensation

$3-5k   -donor meds

=about $31,000!!!

Is that how much you spent?

Hey my dear!

As you know, I'm pregnant with my own egg, but I was considering embryo donation through California Conceptions.  They were even ready to send out the donor profiles to me when I got news of my BFP.  I liased with Corey Owens, who was wonderful.

Considering donor eggs/embryos is a huge decision and one I was finding really hard to come to, especially as I already had my own genetic children.  You have so much to think about and there is never any right or wrong decision.  It is strange and overwhelming, so don't rush anything.  Donor programmes will always be there for you.  MHV first put me onto California Conceptions, and from all I've read and received from them, they seem to be pretty good and straight up.  But of course, I've never went down that track, so it maybe worth doing some good checks with those on MH who have used donor programmes.

What you do need to do is make decisions which are right for YOU & DH, and not to feel like you're being pushed into any one programme or any one donor.  Becoming pregnant through donation is a wonderful option, but it could be emotionally challenging also, so you need to make sure you are totally comfortable with the profiles and feel a connection with them.  I am so glad you're looking at this and hope you find all the answers and the best programme for you.  Remember to pm me if you ever need to talk about anything.  Big hugs to you!  XOXOXO

Thank you Kerry!!!

I'm surprised to hear they would show you profiles. I may have misunderstood, but I was under the impression that I would not see any profiles if I went the D Embie route.

Corey Owens is the coordinator and I met him last Friday in the office. He is a really nice man. I am calling him tomorrow to discuss options and will ask about the donor profiles. Do you remember if that $9800 was a total cost or if the donor meds are addditional? It seems like such a low number to include everything!

Hopefully I'll get more feedback from others who have been down this road!!

So glad your baby is doing so nicely! Hang in there love!

Awww thanks Tones :) I know I can always count on you for support. I'm so thankful you didn't have to go down this route!! It is truly truly difficult! I know once I make the decision and get preggers i will be happy... It's just an emotional process.

Cher,

No I didn't spend that much, but I went a little different route, I used frozen donor eggs.  For 6 eggs,it cost me 10K.  1200 for the transfer.  Everything else was covered under my dh's insurance, thankfully.  I went through NHFC in NYC.  This is also where Plumber (Melanie) went to as well using frozen eggs.  I'm not sure how you feel about traveling across the country but it is possible, they have many out of state patients.  Just a thought.  Right now I think you and your dh just have to really research and think about what is best for the two of you.  xoxo Joann

Cher,
I paid $10,000.00 for 6 eggs. They guarantee 2 make it to blastocyst. You pay for each fet. They freeze the embies and then do fet. Each fet is $1200.00. Meds and monitoring is paid for by my insurance. I got to pick my donor, we saw pictures of her as an adult and a baby. Since the eggs were frozen I got to do the transfer right away. I got 4 blasts out of 6 an now I have 2 blasts left. Good luck it can be a difficult process.
Love hugs and SSBD,
Melanie

Hi Cher,
I live in the DC area and I went through Shady Grove Fertility, it cost me about $27,000 and it pretty much broke down the way you laid it out.  I did a 3 to 1 ratio, meaning I shared the donor with 2 other people, I got 18 eggs for my DH to fertalize.  I think 9 fertalized, last year I transferred 2 blasts (I has a mc) , because of the mc I got 5% of my money back. Only 2 survived the freezing, and the 5% I received aft the mc covered the next transferr.  So now I had my last two transferred on 1/3/12 and things are looking good.

Good luck,

Phyllis

AWw Cher, sorry this is soo difficult.  I know good things don't come easy but we all need a serious break here. I also don't know all about DE but I do wish you the very best in whatever you choose to do!  I'm also praying you get your BFP!! Just know we're all here for you and I personally wouldn't have it no other way(other than none of us having go through the things we have and to be blessed immediately with a baby). You're a very dear friend of mine and I'll always be here for you! :D

I called that NHFC last week and they said that the six frozen eggs were $10,000.00 but the transfer was $3,500.00. I guess it's still a pretty good price, but it was a better price at $1,200.00 or $2,000.00 for the transfer. It's such a bummer that all this is so expensive. A fresh donor cycle would be out of the question for us. So while we try to save up for frozen DE's, we will keep TTC with my own eggs, I guess.

Hope you get it all figured out, Cher. It sure is a tough field to navigate! (very time-consuming, but I'm sure well worth it in the end!)

Look into Shady Grove. I think they have the best rates in the country for donor egg. I did not use them but I know they had the most options.

Also ask for anyone in your area doing research protocols. If they are testing new meds or new procedures you can save $$.

You also have donor programs in Mexico City. I had seen a show once about a couple from Canada going there, it's much less expensive than in the US and they have clinics targeting foreigners. Worth looking into!

Sherri, I think the fet is 3500 due to the monitoring. I'm not 100% sure but I think so. My insurance covered monitoring.
Hugs,
Mel

USUK I think you are correct about Shady Grove, they do have have several programs to choose from and depending on your income they return a certain amount back to you if the procedure is not successful and that refund can go toward your next transfer.  They are worth checking into,  Good luck and if you have any questions we are all here for you!

Wow, you're getting there Cher!!!!  I don't know which clinic you're going with, but in reply to your question, yes, Corey was going to send me donor embryo profiles, but it didn't go ahead because I was pregnant with my own egg by then.  I thought the $9,800 covered all, but I'm not sure.  Anyway, it looks as if things are moving on & you're close to making a decision.  And you're right, I'm sure once you're pregnant, all the reservations will be gone!  Hugs to you XOX

I am on the waiting list at CNY Fertility Center in Syracuse, NY for a DE cycle.  They are VERY reasonable.  A designated DE cycle is $11,000 plus meds.  A split cycle is $6,800.  Although NY has a lot of regulations and requires all embryos to remain in the state, it is MUCH MUCH less expensive.  I am traveling from Charlotte, NC for my cycle.

Hey Moma_Cher,
I looked into CA Conceptions. They do not necessarily guarantee 2 embies per FET. They defrost two and if both make it they transfer both. But, if only one makes it then that is what you get. And, they make no guarantees that your 2nd transfer (should you need one) will be with the same genetic embies. This meaning that they may be a whole separate set of embies. It still seems like a pretty good deal expecially if you are cash strapped. I am using the equity in my house to pay for donor eggs with DH. Honestly, although I know it would be a lot of work, I am hoping to achieve with twins due to my age. I wish you the best. None of these decisions are easy. We all struggle and it helps us all to be on here. Baby dust to you! You will get your baby one way or another!

You might also look into Exceptional Donors, in Portland, Oregon.  They seemed more reasonable than some of the numbers quoted here.

Hey Annie/Moma-Cher, Exceptional Donors is actually who I am using. I love my RE there, he has been 100% above board with me from the get-go. This is unlike where I was going previously. In any case, I can't say that they are inexpensive. But, the New Hope Fertility Center in NY where Mel went looks like a great option. It may even work out to be cheaper to go there with the added cost for airfare! I sort of wish I had taken more time to research all of this, but the research in and of itself is tiring and I think most of us feel just plain tired from the whole process. Hugs to both of you.
