Hospital stay - delayed OHSS

Mar 04, 2012 - 9 comments

Well where do I start.  I woke up yesterday morning to a small amount of brown spotting and felt immediately concerned about it.  Then some sharp stabbing pains started up on my right side and I thought oh no please not another ectopic - what are the chances of my IVF embryo floating up into my tube - surely not!!  Anyways it got worse so I thought f#*k this I'm off to the hospital.
I get to emergency and tell them I suspect another ectopic - I got rushed straight through which was great.  Got an ultrasound pretty quickly and was so nervous as to what I was going to see. I saw the sac in my uterus which was amazing and she thought she may have seen the start of the yolk sac but she wasn't sure.  She said my tilted uterus was making it hard to see.  She then checked my ovaries and said oh dear - I thought oh no whaaaatt.  She said wow your ovaries are huge and you've got lots of huge follicles and you've got heaps of free fluid - you've hyperstimulated and that's what the pain will be from.  I told her they only got 8 eggs out of me and I had no signs of hyperstimulation at my egg retrieval. She said the doc will talk to me about it after she gives them her findings.  So I talk to the doc later and she said I had mild to moderate OHSS and I would have to stay in hospital.  So I had to wear special leg socks and they had to monitor my liquid input and output and I had to have my tummy measured etc.  I just stayed last night and they finally let me out today after lots of begging (I hate staying in hospital) but they made me promise to go back if I get the pain back or vomiting or shortness of breath etc.  So yeah I am home now and feeling ok actually.
Apparently none of this is going to affect the baby thank god.  By the way the spotting stopped pretty much as soon as I arrived at the hospital and I haven't had any more which is good.  They did check my HCG levels yesterday which had gone up to 6,600 (4 days before it was 2,329) .  I was very concerned that it hadn't doubled every 48 hours but I read when I got home that after it reaches 1200 the doubling time slows down to 72 - 96 hours so I guess I'm ok.  I am a bit concerned that I didn't see the yolk sac though - I was 5weeks, 5days yesterday so should it have been clearly visible - when did you first see yours???

Hey sweety. Sorry to hear about the ohss. But I'm glad your doing ok and I'm glad you got to see the sac in the right spot!! I thought I had mild ohss even with only 4 eggs cause I had that stabbing ovary pain till about 6wks. But it wasn't to bad. I can tell you that I had my 1st u/s at 5wks 4days and all we saw was the sac and this tiny dot in each which they said had to be the ys. You can look at those u/s pics on my profile and you can see in one pic all you see is the 2 sacs in another pic you can see the 2 dots in the sac. Honestly I think your still early to see anything besides the sac. It also depends on the tech doing the scan, the machine they are using to. I bet when you have your next scan you will see how much growth occurred. And your beta seems perfect! It doubles like you said 72-96 hrs after hcg is 1200. Did the say the spotting was from the ohhs? I bet it was. I was so worried cause I kept coming on here to see if you posted anything. Anyway I'm glad your home. Rest up!! Take it easy!! And look at my 5wk scan pics I bet it will make you feel better that we didn't see much either. Xoxoxo

Thank you so much hun - that definately makes me feel much better.  I looked at your pics and yes mine looked pretty much the same except there was only one sac of course lol.  I think I will still be having my scan at my clinic on Wednesday so hopefully the yolk sac will be clearly visible by then.  They said that the spotting probably isn't related to the OHSS so I dunno what brought it on - I really hope it doesn't come back because it just freaks me out.  I know everone keeps telling to relax and that it's normal to have spotting but I just can't help panicking.  Anyways thanks for your notes and I'm really glad you are ahead of me so that I can compare what is happening to me xx

I know how worried everything will make you. It's easy to say relax but it's hard to actually do it. I know I still check the tp everytime I go potty. Just wait as the weeks go by you will feel so much going on in your tummy it will freak you out. From cramping, pulling, pinching all kinds of stuff! Oh the joys! Lol. Anyway try to stay off your feet whenever you can.

Hey there, I am so glad you are ok, I had a bit of a panic when I saw you post up about the spotting! I am sorry to hear you have been in so much pain, and I hope the hyperstymulation goes away soon and your all back to normal (pregnancy normal anyways :P)  Some people can see the yolk sac at 5wks 4 days, but not likely with a tilted uterus, I have spoken to a few people that have a tilted uterus and they all say the same, it took a little extra time for the ultrasounds to find everything is all, the sac is where it is meant to be so that is good!!! you take it easy missus and lilly will keep you right on everything like you say cos she is ahead of you :) xxxx

I went to ER at 5w5d as well with spotting.   We did not see any yolk sack at that time either.  Then at the follow up appt at 6w1d we saw a h/b.  Development takes place so fast at these early stages.
Glad that baby is doing OK.

What a scare. I am glad that you are ok and that the OHSS won't affect the baby. That is great that they saw the sac in your uterus. I am sure that the tilted uterus is the reason they couldn't see the yolk sac and by the time your doctor does your utlrasound you will be able to see a heart beat.

Thanks everyone!  Yeah I hope it is the tiled uterus that is making it hard to see - when I have my next scan on Wednesday I think I will be 6 weeks, 2 days so I really hope there is more to see!  Thanks again for your comments and putting my mind at ease xxx

I am glad the little bean is ok :) In my many pregnancies I never seen a yolk sack before 6 weeks. It also depends on the equipment they are using. Hang in there :)
