all kids are different. he sounds quite normal to me. i have 4 kids my self and they each have started talking at all different times. but my youngest has spoken one word he has said mum and he is almost 5 months old. the key is to repeat the words and when you think they have said a word keep at it and tell them that they are a good boy(or a good girl). some times making up cards with shapes, colours and pictures can help repeat them and they will get it in the end. even when you walk down the street pick things out to them, or even find the things they like most and talk to them about it and even read stories can help pick one the bits in the book. one way they learn the most is to talk to them normally and repeat words good luck.
