On another board there is a thread labeled Exercise Accountability. It is members post brief descriptions of there ongoing exercise activity. Posting to the thread helps keep me motivated. I've started this journal to provide my MedHelp friends a place to do the same. My journal is open to all who care to post. :-)

Kyle

Today I walked on the treadmill for 45 minutes and covered 2.5 miles. I carried 3LB hand weights and did random arm exercises.

Absolutely! That's why I created the journal. I wanted to have a place where we could post without waving a regular thread in people's faces :-)

Nice! When I move out of the city I'm getting a bike. All of the aerobic benefit without the weight bearing joint stress.

Does thinking HARD about exercising today count?  (excellent idea :)

yeah, I thought about it too, really hard, I think that should count.  Well, I did walk more yesterday, trailing along behind DH and son, so that has to count for something

Make hay while the Sun shines Jane!

Following an action packed weekend I'm getting back on the treadmill tomorrow. One thing I'm finding is that discretion is the better part of valor. I didn't get any "formal" exercise this weekend, but I did a lot of running around. I took today off to reset things. Over doing it can lead to several recovery days. I'm trying to avoid that.

Did an hour of yoga yesterday - not as impressive as it sounds since most of the time was spent trying to figure out what I should be doing, but I'm really enjoying it so far.  Wednesday my neuro noticed that my balance is a bit better than it was previously, so maybe it's helping.  :)

45 minutes/2.47 miles on the treadmill w/hand weights today. I've decided that discretion is the better part of valor. The other day I did 45 Minutes (30 mins@1% incline) /2.56 miles. It took couple of days to bounce back. I want this to be sustainable. I may get there eventually but for now I'm going to stay at the slower, flatter pace.

Outside today, 4.5 miles in 80 minutes. It was not hot, but it was very sunny. I wore my cooling collar.

The foot flailing switched sides. It had happened with my right leg before but today it was my left. My right leg was fine.

I sat for 10 mintues and it was fine. Has anyone had a n exertion related sx switch sides?

I kicked some ***!! Haha it was so great to be back after 2 years. I have forgot alot of it but it did start to come back. I told sensei about my MS and said if I get over heated I may have to step out. She was very sweet about it. My husband is a black belt (we met at karate), and she had us team up for a bit to go over some moves! I didn't expect that but it was cool. I was a pro though, didn't let those family bonds affect my concentration! I'm really glad I went back. I'll be going again on weds for sparring!! :) YAY!

It went really well!! I'm so pleased I'm back! I don't know why I waited so long to go back. Sparring was fun, I really like it. I have a fresh bruise on my arm from it... I bruise like a peach though :) Yes Jane! you should do one your crazy 10 milers!! I'm so inspired by those :)

4.5 miles outside in about 1 hour, 25 minutes. It was hot and pretty humid. At about 4 miles my left foot was starting to flail so I sat for 5 minute then finished slowly. A little rest seems to work wonders. After I cool down it goes away completely...

Yesterday I went to karate even though my eye was blurry. It wasn't sparring so figured I would be ok. I was ok and weirdly it helped with my eye pain!! Today it was Dx as minor ON but not recommended IV steroids and I agreed. Hopefully my vision will be better by weds so I can go to karate again!! :)

Outside this morning. 2.8 miles/48 minutes. First day of Ampyra, too soon to tell I think...

1831849 tn?1383231992
by kwarendorf, Jun 16, 2012
Today was Day 2 on half a dose of Ampyra, 10mg once/day. I walked 4.5 miles in 1 hour, 20 minutes outside in full no clouds anywhere sunshine. There was not a hint of my flailing foot! None, nada, zip! All previous outdoor walking has resulted in loss of control of either left or right foot after about 45- 60 minutes.

And...this was the first time I have walked outside on consecutive days in a very long time but not flailing foot! I think I may like this stuff

I have been bad about both exercising and updating this thread. Here goes:

06/09: 3+ mile bike ride.
06/10: 4+ mile bike ride
06/16: 7+ mile bike ride

Not nearly enough leg moving going on here. Must... Exercise... More!

Cool mini-thread, Kyle!  And good for all of you!

I did 19 miles on my bike, yesterday, down to the beach and back.  Coming back was hard, and my leg spasms were tweaking my L knee :-(  400 ft altitude change from beach to start (very gentle).

I used to do 60 miles without thinking, now a 10-15 mile ride is most common, punctuated by the occasional 20-25.  Takes me 3-6 days to recover.  Totally worth the mood boost, though, and yesterday, I definitely need the attitude adjustment!

Welcome to our little group G_g ! I think we can all benefit from doing as much as we can. I also think the enouragement of others is a great help. I didn't want to wave it in everyone's face, thus the semi private journal :-)

4.5 Miles/1HR 15 Minutes outside this morning.

My experimenting continues. Today I took Ampyra but did not wear mu cooling collar. Towards the end my foot fall got a little heavy but  no loss of leg control. It was warm and there wasn't a cloud anywhere so i was in direct sun. When i wear the collar but don't take Ampyra i tend to lose control of my leg after about 45 minutes.

8 hours on bike in Vancouver sounds like so much fun! DH and I are on our way to Napa Valley now for our honeymoon. I'm going to try to convince him to do a bike day while we're out.

dogmum: I have used an app called Runkeeper for some bike rides, but it ***** a lot of juice on my phone. I pretty much only use it now to determine distance on a new route. I find it very useful for that.

Yesterday: Approx 11 miles on bike in downtown Napa. Today: 15 miles on bike through the Yountville section of Napa Valley. Today's route was *beautiful*, through rolling hills and vineyards. It hit 90 degrees, however, and I somehow managed to work up enough heat to bring back my L'Hermittes. It was totally worth it!

If anyone ever heads out to Napa, I *highly* recommend biking in Yountville. Check out Napa Valley Bike Tours for rentals that include route advice and a smile.

Are you feeling a lot of benefit from the treadmill walking, Kyle? I'm having some weird gait/balance issues lately, and staring to think that walking practice might be in order. Any recommendations for walking speed or technique? Your exercise stamina and dedication are looking pretty impressive lately.

1831849 tn?1383231992
by kwarendorf, Aug 04, 2012
In a word, yes :-) i have slight balance issues too. It's not all that noticible but if I change directtion or turn quickly I can need an extra step to right myself. I used to hold the hand rails when I was on the treadmill. I don't  anymore. When I started I went very slowly, 2.5 mph, for only about 20 minutes. Over about a month I built it up tp 45 minutes at 3.5 mph. I'm not looking to break any records. I. Just want something that is sustainable for me.

Adding the hand weights allows me to make the most of my 45 minutes. They also really force me to pay attention to my gait and balance. Ampyra helps too :-) All of the above have helped me drop 35 lbs and greatly improved my mobility.

Not bad, they need a bit of tweaking. The macademia nuts are pretty oily. I'm going to try with half the amount specified and dry roasting them first...

The past two nights: Crunch Candlelight Yoga before bed. I am already noticing a difference in how I feel. I don't know why I let myself stop doing in after I moved to Beantown, but my NY resolution is to do it every school night before bed (5 nights a week) from now until Spring break.

Hi Kyle, old friend! Hugs :)

Slowly emerging from my temporary slothfulness, 45 minutes on the tread mill with hand weights today.

i saw my doc last week. he was very pleased with my general physical condition. He said that MS responds badly to stress, emotional and physical. The better my condition, the lower my level of physical stress. he said that plays a big part in keeping my MS quiet. Nice to know we're not doin' this fer nuthin' :)

How the heck did I miss this!? I'm definitely due for a bit of public accountability.

Lately I've been focusing on free weights as I have the opportunity to do a lot of walking simply by forgoing public transport (Dublin is actually pretty compact). I have to say, I've seriously considered the treadmill as an option too. We'll stop renting at some point and as Irish houses are tiny, it's best I don't purchase one before I know it will actually fit!

With the weights, I go higher weight/fewer reps to just under the point of muscle failure (using that as a technical gym-term, not related to injuring myself!). What I really need to get a handle on is consistency.

Today, the energy bank's balance is pretty low though, so I've prioritised housework and this evening's grocery run. Plans for tomorrow include circuit training.

Hiya and welcome to my little exercise club!

For me the key IS consistency. I needed to find a level of exercise that was effective and within my limits. The treadmill removes excuses like it's too cold, it looks like rain or it's too hot. The climate in my apartment is pretty consistent :-)

Another component of consistency is time. I really don;t want to have to spend two hours a day, or every other day, exercising. When I walk on the treadmill I also have a series of arm exercises using dumbbells.  This way I get to kill two birds with one stone. Carrying the dumbbells also makes the walking more strenuous.

I've been able to average about 3 times a week for the last year. I've lost 45 pounds and am in better shape than I've been in a long time! All I needed to get going was an incurable disease :-)

So, today I did weight reps and really focused on keeping good form. I also use an exercise ball. I'll admit today I didn't really worry about form there. It was more about having a bit of fun. But it's great for the abs if you do the right exercises. I didn't push myself too much, but I did *something*. This is the thing I'm prioritising at the moment. Gorgeous, sunny day here in Dublin. Certainly helps with the get-up-and-go!

Way to go on the Nike ride, Kyle!

Back from a few days in Mayo. The weather was un.believe.able. Not a drop of rain. And dare this Southern transplant describe it as hot? There's no air conditioning here, so that's affirmative! But no humidity, so it was blissfuly lapped up. In fact, if a vitamin D overdose is possible, I may just have it!

Many walks and assorted outdoors-y activities, the highlight of which was finally getting to the summit of Mount Gable. 'Climbing' it only takes about 40 minutes, but trekking to the technical summit marker over the bogs and sheep and small hills that make up the top takes another 40. Here's a photo from a more motivated person (photographically speaking) than we. https://www.************/photo.php?fbid=362012310575787&set=o.315905805147840&type=1&theater

Luckily, it was just the stuff. I felt like I'd accomplished something, but hadn't wiped myself out. The physical activity sweet spot! Tomorrow I start my programming course. I'm going to attempt walking to and from it. (about 2 miles/45 minutes each way) I walk almost the exact same route to my neurology appointments, but only once a month. We'll see how it goes. Stocked up on audiobooks for the ipod at any rate!

I do. My treadmill quit about a month ago. My walking is capped at about 45 minutes these days. I figured it made more sense to invest in new equipment that I should be able to use further into the future, so I bought the bike :-)

So, I'm working with my PT on my left leg control issue. In addition to 3 Kitchen Sink exercises I am working on the road as well. We are trying to see if I can't break through the 45 minute wall.

Yesterday and today I walked 20 minutes then rested for 5, walked another 20 minutes then rested for 5, then walked another 20 minutes. I covered about 3 miles. I'm using hiking poles for balance and stability. I'm also wearing a Dorsit-Lite Foot Splint which keeps your foot and shin at a 90 degree angle. Yesterday at the end of the third 20 minutes my legs were pretty wobbly. Today they were better.
Next we see what happens when I up the walk to 25 minutes...

Kyle do you work out every day?  Me, today: 45 minutes on treadmill. I'm on episode 9, season 1 of Suits. 29 more episodes to go. Going to try to do this daily. + walk the Standard Poodle 30-60 mins. Short term goal is 10 lbs in 6 weeks. No processed sugar till I reach my goal. Hopefully this will help me break my addiction to it.

1831849 tn?1383231992
by kwarendorf, Jan 08, 2014
My goal is every other day. It's one I can typically meet. If I try to exercise everyday, I'm likely to end up bored, tire, frustrated etc. Your 10 lbs in 6 weeks is pretty much what I want to accomplish. I tend to eat pretty well. This tendency was not holding true during vaca in Italy, T-giving,  Christmas... My standard diet is lots of leafy greens and lean proteins.  If I can just stop baking cookies and cakes for a while...

Suits is a favorite. This last season they started to border on ridiculous story lines though...time will tell.

Yes my diet was terrible over Christmas and my birthday. SO much sugar. Not good. Cutting calories way back and lots more veg. Exercising faithfully and then darn it, I'm getting sick so no treadmill for me today. Hopefully I won't lose too many days over this ailment.  I just realized Netflix only has season 1 and 2 so I'm going to have to find another series pretty soon to keep me engaged.  I wish House of Cards would hurry up and be released!!

Well yesterday I did actually find my way back to my bike! And again today. Both days 45 minutes, no weights.

I need to lose 10 pounds and need some incentive. For me incentive comes in the form of visible results. To achieve these results I need to be far more diligent about exercise.

I asked myself "Why are you only exercising every other day?" At some point I determined that I shouldn't push myself too hard. Now I'm thinking why not? what's the worst thing that could happen? I over do it and need a couple of days to recuperate? My doc has told me that overexertion will not aggravate my MS. My MS may make the recuperation longer.

So my new plan is to ride my exercise bike every day for 45 minutes. So far I'm 2 for 2. No weights for now. I want to develop the habit of exercising everyday before I add them back in.
