slighty anemic...

Aug 30, 2012 - 4 comments

So my nurse called a couple of weeks ago saying I was slightly anemic and to start taking iron supplements. I boughtbsome andbthey made my gerd( acid reflux) much worse. My protonix couldnt keep up, so I discont. The supplements. I am now adding plenty of iron through diet and my gerd is back to normal. Why do nurses and drs automatically go to meds and supplements? They arent always best? Did you know cereals alone can have 20 plus mg of iron alone and the supplements have 65 mg. not very hard to find enough iron through food.

The problem I have with iron isn't finding enough foods with it, it's getting my body to absorb what I eat.  My red blood cells are on the smaller side and don't like to absorb the large iron mineral... So even with my prenatal, fortified cereal, spinach salad, etc. plus my iron supplement, I still run anemic.  I'm just used to the exhaustion now... lol

I think there are two diffenrt types of iron. The heme and nonheme. Heme is found more in animal products and is easily absorbed into the body. Also Vitamin C helps with the absorption of Iron as calcium does the opposite. If the supplements don't cause you issues then I would stick with them if it's better for you and baby. I was just slightly anemic and don't think going with the supplements was best for me.

Oh yes and I don't have any typical symptoms of iron deficiently so I think I'm definitely in a better situation Heather. I'm sorry you have to go through that.

I hate my supplements.  They make me seriously constipated - even with a stool softener (sorry TMI).  I'm braving it out the best I can though! lol
