Severe Sleep Apnea?!?

Oct 17, 2012 - 4 comments

Wow, so... Sleep specialist dr says I have severe sleep apnea, nice! I have no idea what that means, aside from I stop breathing frequently during the night, and my oxygen level dips alarmingly low.  And he wants me to wear this big face mask thingy machine to bed every night, for how long?  That would be forever:(.  So what's the alternative?  If left untreated death can occur!  How fun, a special sleeping machine face mask thingy at night.  Anybody reading this have any experience with them?

hi,
my husband used a cpap machine. thats what it is called for sleep apnea for 10 years. he had severe apnea. would stop breathing hundereds of times every hour.
i want to ask you if you are still taking pain meds? the reason i ask is because the opiates, also alcohol and benzos, all these meds are respiratory  and central nervous system depressants and definitely make the problem worse, being overweight also contributes to the problem.
when my husband stopped using methadone, benzos and alcohol and lost weight he doesnt have the sleep apnea anymore.

I do take pain killers.  I am not taking as much as I have in the recent past.  I am going to try the mask thing, but I really hope it doesn't last.  And yes I am overweight but I wasn't always and I've had these sleep issues since before I was one pain Meds and before I gained weight, but hopefully since I am secretly weening myself off my pills, and trying to lose weight that perhaps what worked for your husband will work for me.  I have had this probably since I was a teenager it just went undiagnosed (mainly because I never spoke to the Dr about it, I spent some time in the hospital and a staff member noticed and put it in my chart).  But I was an athletic kid and yet have had these sleep issues since I was a kid.  Thank you for your help.

What kind of pain killers are you using? I know that some can enhance sleep issues even though the RX bottle will indicate “drowsiness” etc.

I'm on Oxycodone, and Oxyneo (slow release), and a sleeping pill (Zoplicone).
