Lost friend to alcoholism

Jul 12, 2013 - 10 comments

Very sad because my friend died from drinking. He asked me for help him to quit drinking, but didn't go to AA meetings or detox and died July 6 in the early morning. He was falling down and killed himself hitting his head. He wasn't willing to quit, even though that's what he said.

My heart goes out to you. I know what it's like to lose friends to alcohol & other drugs. You did all you could. Unfortunately, it's up to us do it for Ourselves & Ourselves, first. Sometimes people are just so far-gone that they just can't seem to pull the clarity & strength together to lean on someone & help themselves. I hope that you're able to process this grief in a timely way. Remember, your friend & all the good things about him are now part of you. He lives in all the positive ways he touched the world.

So sorry for your loss.  Such a shame, a needless tragedy.  May your friend rest easy.

aww  judy I am so sorry to hear this. we do the best we can and try to help those we know and love out of the throngs and grips of addiction. the very sad fact is they need to do the work and to help themselves.  it is so sad that addiction kills so many people. when I hear of another death I am just so happy and proud of those who have climbed their way out of the pit they were in.
grieve for your friend that is important. you were a friend to me and I am sure he knows that. he came to you for help because he saw that you were living free of the chains and bondage of addiction.
he is free now.
sending prayers for peace and comfort,
hugs and much love,

Losing someone close.....that you SO BADLY wanted to help.....makes us feel so powerless...(which we are)....but I know your heart is aching and wishin he would have accepted your help.  "There but for the grace of God go I"....right?
So proud of your 659 days, girl.  YOU ROCK!!

I had the same thing happen a couple yrs ago, on here to be exact.  He fell down the stairs at his moms house and died.  He fought his addiction all his life.  I miss him but now i am so grateful that i got the opportunity to know him.  He was so full of wisdom.  Let yourself feel your emotions and keep reaching out.  We cant save everyone, only ourselves~

sorry to hear of your friend that died. Surely a sad way to go, even more that it was inadvertantly self-inflicted.  Please forgive me, but if I cannot get sober, I would like to go this way too rather than suffer the long-drawn out pain of liver failure, liver cancer etc. Don't hate me for that. congrats on your continued sobriety.
