Give Me That Old Time Religion

Apr 20, 2009 - 28 comments

I wrote this article for the newspaper and lo and behold, they actually printed it, I wanted to share with others.

Hi~A friend started a conversation about the break up of marriages and about the situation in the world in general. This was my reply:

I think the reason marriages do not work are, and it is so sad, God is NOT invited to the marriage, they do not want HIM to tell them what to do, in so many words now a days, they tell HIM to leave them alone in all ways, soooo, being the gentleman that He is, He does. When you think about it, it is that way in other circumstances as well. God is kicked out of our schools, out of our public offices, out of Christmas, all the schools say "winter" break instead of Christmas, and all carols have been banned from school.  The Nativity scene is no longer welcome in public places.  Heaven forbid that God be allowed ANYWHERE it seems. Look at all the abortions performed each year, we are murdering HIS children, a gift, that must surely hurt Him. These atheist  say that it "Offends" them to see the mention of God anywhere. Well, I say too darn bad. It offends me NOT to see a mention of God anywhere. I want to know, where are the churches and leaders in all this?. They should be standing up against all the abortions, atheist attacks, etc. They seem afraid to make them angry, well, they better start taking up for our Lord before it is too late. Even in this very little town where I live, there were a group of people who wanted this banner taken down that said "God Bless Our Troops". The mention of God "offended" them. Who cares!!!! They offended me when they put that in the paper. The "enemy" is getting such a strong hold on our country, it is not even funny. Satan is ruling us now, not God. That is so evident in everything you see. Immorality, crimes, drugs, permissive living, marriages breaking up, the list goes on.  Another thing that gets me is when someone says that they are "a self made millionaire" NO WAY, they are a self made "nothing!" We are absolutely NOTHING without God. He gives us all that we have, the talents, brains, thoughts, etc. Apart from God, we can do nothing. Self made, I think not!! Another expression that really gets me is when someone says that they know too much science to believe in God. Just shows how ignorant they really are. Why, look at the eye, for example, the intricacy of it, the nerves, blood vessels, arteries, and being able to see with all that. Yeah right, it all evolved from a pool of slime or a stupid explosion, get a life and start living I say to these people. Those who believe in Darwin are so mislead, Evolution would be so much harder for me to believe in than God's creation, Evolution just does not make sense to me. This is kept under cover by the liberals, but on his death bed, Darwin, it has been said, admitted he was wrong, so THAT for those who believe otherwise. I think another way Satan is working is through the ACLU, they have their liberal hand in all that is wrong. Can't do this, can't do that, God offends us, don't discipline your children, allow assisted suicide to kill yourself if you are sick, on and on it goes. Oregon, the state next to us, allows that suicide, that is so wrong, I would not want to live there for that reason alone. God, sometimes. will allow us to have these terminal illnesses to wake us up to bring us back to HIM. True, He does want all His children to be healed and happy, but sometimes, for reasons unknown to our puny brain, He says "No" and we accept that  knowing we WILL be healed and whole when we join Him in Heaven.

This is the "Me Generation". Everyone is so concerned about themselves, that they have no time to notice anything else going on with their neighbor, nor do they care. As long as all is well with them, fine, who cares who is sick, is lonesome, depressed, hungry,or fearful. It is a sad situation. Gone are the days when people were generally concerned for the others welfare. A friendly smile, a hug in friendship, volunteering to help others when needed. Gone, simply vanished. Now, for the most part, I am not saying everyone, all you see are frowning faces, people trying to rip their fellow man off, little children in the primary grades of school taking guns to school and being handed condoms. What has this world come to, and they have the audacity to say that times are better now than before. From what I have observed, I sure do not think so. I love the magazine "Good Ole Days" and it sure seems that even through the rough times, people were much happier AND healthier. It stands to reason, you can NOT put all these chemical, hormones and junk in your food and expect to feel good after you eat it. They were happier because they were living the "good life" the way our Saviour wanted them to live it. On Sundays, the entire family would dress in their Sunday best, hop into the shined up automobile that they had cleaned on Saturday, and attend church together. Afterwards, they would go on picnics, or just have quality time together. I guess I am old fashioned, but I am proud of it, I think those days were far superior to now. Oh sure, I am very grateful for the modern conveniences, I am the first to admit, I would have a difficult time doing without them. But did we have to go to such drastic extremes in our moral and religious life?

Yes, we sure DO need to spend quality time with God, big time. We need to get down on our knees and ask Him back into our activities, our lives. We need to seek His will in all that we do. The bible must be read and read again. He should be the first One we turn to in times of all trouble and yes, even happiness, for after all, He likes to know that we like and appreciate what He gives us. We all want want want, we never thank Him for what we have. I am guilty of that myself at times.

Discernment, what a wonderful gift and how little it seems to be used anymore. Yes, many a circumstance could have been different if we had discernment. We should pray for that one gift un-ceasingly. I wish I had been more in tune to it before I made some of the mistakes in my life that I regret to this day.

Whoa, did I get on my soap box or what. I love talking about God, and I can go on for hours sometimes. It is good to witness like this. I want to end this by saying, yes, there are good people in the world, there are good things in the world. We, as Christians, have to develop what is out there and see to it that our lost, Christian values are brought back to the forefront.  With prayer, anything can be accomplished. Please God, I just pray it is not too late.

God bless

Wow well put, I totally agree with you, I am a mormon myself, I know without God my life would have no purpose, I am disapointed that values are being lost, over here in the uk our young girls from the age of 13 can now get the morning after pill from the school nurse, without their parents knowing, We should be teaching them how to value their bodies and themselves, the word that seems to be missing to me is abstanence, we should be teaching how to abstane from sex, drugs and violence, and teach how to achieve self esteem and a belief in god.

I read on a post earlier where someone said there is no proof that God exists, well, I beg to differ, I mean, just look around you, who do they think made all the wonderful trees, nature, animals, EVERYTHING, and as I said in my journal, just look at the eye, how delicate it is, there is no way it could happen by itself, no way at all.  There is no one or no "thing" that can create the baby in the womb and have it develop like it does, the human body is a miracle in itself.

I feel sorry for those that do not believe, they are in for a rude awakening, first, when they die, then they will know the truth, and also, in this life, they are missing out on so much by NOT believing. It is sad.

If someone were to say, "well, there is the big bang theory" I would keep asking "well, where did it all start, there had to be a beginning, who started it" There would be no way they could answer.

Excellent post. Has there been any response in the newspaper?

You are right about the spiritual leaders. But then, where are us Christians when the powers that be tell us we have to back off?  That we can't have the religious freedom this world was founded on?

This "offended" mess is just a ploy from satan to keep politically correctness in vogue, and keep God and His plan out of the world.

America has turned into such a godless nation, and we the believers sat back and watched it slowly take place. Everything that was once sin is now called "rights". That is only to us humans. To God, it is still sin.

America will be in BIG trouble if we turn our back on Israel.

Wonderful post. I wish I could put it into words like you, unfortunately the situation of the world these days tends to anger me! When someone says I do not believe, do not shove it down my throat, I get the urge to do just that! I no that is not the right approach deep down, but it really angers me when people cannot c what is right in front of them. Dont have any proof god exists? Well, if they wanna believe their ancestors swung from a tree by their tales, I guess god gave them the free will to choose that belief. Grrh!

Excellent article, Susie. I agree 100%.
Peggy, you bring up a good point. They say something like 80% of Americans claim to be Christian. Then why are we allowing our rights to be taken away and our faith trampled on? It's gotten to the point where we have free speech for everything but talking about God, especially Jesus. A generic god might be ok for some but don't mention the God of the Bible or Jesus! Then everyone gets offended. We are more respectful of any other religion or belief than the God of the Bible anymore. What happened? Did He get too old fashioned or something? Yet the Bible is still a best selling book. They've never been able to completely get rid of God. God says His word will not come back void. There's power in His word for all who believe and depend on Him.
God doesn't want wishy-washy people, or as He puts it "Lukewarm people". He wants us to be strong and passionate for Him. We need to be remembering to put on our Armor of God every day. These are troubled times we live in.

Peggy, no, no one commented, one lady in church did, but that was it, I was sort of surprised.
Teko, I am just like you, when someone tells me to back-off, I want to do the opposite, I mean, it irritates me so, they want their say about the Lord, but when we have ours, they say we are pushing Him in their face. OHHHHH, I get so angry.
April, I agree, there is nothing old-fashioned about the bible, it is just as "real" today as it was when it was written. True, seems like we can talk about ANYTHING but the Lord, and I am getting so tired of it.
jimi, the poem is so pretty.
Jollyman, Amen and Amen again.

Jesus IS Lord and always will be whether unbelievers like it or not, can't they see how bad the times are getting, I guess Satan has blinded them to the truth.

Blessings and hugs to all.

That was a great post and it came at a time when I really needed to hear it.  God wasn't invited when I made the mistake of getting married for all the wrong reason.  It's no surprise that there was a divorce.  He just walked out right after my fourth child was born and we never saw him again - but I'm not complaining, he never had the privilege of seeing those babies grow up and he'll never see his grandchildren.

Most Native people believe that it was God who put us on earth and don't believe in evolution either.  However, I sometimes wonder if God didn't put the process in motion - that's just a thought, not a challenge.  We are created in God's image but I don't know what God looks like.  Darwin's theories were primarily based on plants and animals and it wasn't until Mendel did his "thing" with peas that Darwin's theories were linked with Mendel's that we had "Darwinism".  I digressed again - sorry - I'll go and stand in the corner.  We nerds tend to go off the topic.

Years ago in Canada, we had The Lord's Day Act which made it illegal for any business, except for small convenience stores, to be open.  That law has been repealed and I confess that at the time I supported getting rid of the Act.  Now I think that I was actually supporting materialism instead of God.

You mentioned reading the Bible.  At university, I took some courses in theology (but I don't consider myself to be a theologian) and those courses were more concerned about proving that most of what is in the Bible is incorrect and again I believed it.  Now I read the Bible from my own perspective, not from an academic perspective and what a difference it has made.

Some of what you said I don't agree with but that's irrelevant.  The overall meaning of what you said I do agree with  = )

As a person who is trying to open myself up and "let God in", I found this thread extremely helpful.  I'm glad you wrote it.

What is "Discernment"?

I hope I didn't say anything offensive here.  If I did, it wasn't intentional.

Peace and long life to you .... wolf

Hi Lonewolf, you did not say anything offensive, I value your opinion and there will always be things that folks do not agree with, that is OK. :>) I am very happy that the article helped you.

Discernment is  the quality of being able to grasp and comprehend what is obscure.

I know a lot of colleges that "claim" to teach the bible only do it to prove it wrong, it really irritates me. Why do folks try so hard to prove there is no God, it is ridiculous.

I'm such a bad nerd for not knowing what "Discernment" was.  Everything in academics is obscure; they love to use big words instead of one that everybody can understand.

Maybe some people are just so arrogant and self-important that in their minds they are God.  What would the Almighty think about that?

Amen to every thing you have said here.  You say you live next to Oregon, well if it is Washington State, sadly to say they now have the suicide law.  Jesus is coming for His children soon and then the things that are going on now, will look like sugar candy compared to what God is going to bring on this earth, and then some people will turn to Him, but a lot of them won't, the Bible says they will shake their fists at Him, and also they will plead and pray that they could die to escape the tribulation, but they won't be able to.  Today is the day of salvation, if you hear His voice, turn to Him before it is too late.
I don't know how old you are Susie, I imagine a lot younger than me (I'm 82) and I've seen a ton of changes, and yes the conveniences are nice, but people on the whole are distant and could not care less about their neighbors.  Love to you and God bless you sister.  peony77ja

Lone Wolf, to put the definition for "discernment" another way, it means instinctively knowing what is going on without really being told or being able to see it in person.

Peony, I am 51 years old, and I live in Washington state, I am very ashamed of their suicide law, it makes me sick. My dad is 88 and he has told me about all the changes and to me, they were much better in his day, I guess that is why I am old-fashioned in so many ways, I like to try to emulate them in a small way in my life.

Cherie, how true, but, there sure are those that don't believe.

Dear Susie;  I read your pst and completely agree.  I was raised in a christian home and the blessings I rec can never be measured.  My mom raised all 6 of us children alone.  Each evening we would gather around her in the living room for our family worship.  She would read a Bible story,  help each one of us children with that week's memory verse, then we would each say our evening prayer.  It has been this memory, remembering  those verses she so diligently insisted we learn, the songs I learned in Sunday school, and  all the miracles that God performed in our lives that has helped me thru the difficult times that have come my way .  My mother also practiced the principal of resting on the Sabbath.  She would prepare our meal for the Sabbath ahead of time so she would not be tied down with cooking dinner, cleaning up and not being able to rest.  The day before our day of worship each of us children were given a job of extra cleaning.  When our day of worship arrived our home was sparking clean, dinner was fixed for the next day; we were ready for the Lord's day.  I only mention this as during the craziness of today with all the rushing around we do I reflect back on my chilhood days and  I could always look forward to that one day of peace and quiet, relaxation, spending time studying God's word, reading stories of miracles, and  having time to reach out to my family  spending time building our relationships.  Those were really the good ol' days.

My husband and I seperated about 16 years ago temporarily.  We made the decision to go to church.  We were suppose to meet at our neighbor hood church that Sunday.  God felt it would be best if we did not meet.  We each went to church but I had misunderstood and went to a different church.  That day my husbsnd gave his life to Christ.  (It may not have happened had I been there).  The pastor told us the best thig we could do for our marriage was pray together everyday.  Well.. we started that and have only mised one day .  We would pray just before I went to work.  I have no doubt that we would not be together without those prayers.

I believe i all that you wrote.  If anyone ever needs to hear of God's miracles just drop me a line.  My heart overflows with memories of so many examples of his wonderous love and care for me.  God bless each and everyone.  julia

Julia, Those child-hood days you mention sound wonderful, that is what is missing in today's world, everything is rush rush rush and no one takes any time to enjoy what the Lord has given them; even some church services are rushed.

That is wonderful that you husband gave his life to Christ and that you all prayed every day, I am sure that is why your marriage lasted.

Thanks for sharing your story, I enjoyed it so much.

It's a shame that alot of people are leaving christ out of their lives.........its very sad.  Im 44 years old and even I have seen alot of changes over the years.  I know when i was younger ... we would go to church every Sunday and it seemed like things were alot better back then compared to how things are now.  It seems like there is evil every where you look.  People are so hateful and decieving anymore.  Its very hard to trust someone.  And it seems like its getting worse as time goes by.  I really do believe  that the end of times are near.  Alot of my friends dont believe that but I think things are getting so bad that the good lord is going to come soon.  We all need to be saved.  I havent been to church in a very long time and im not proud of it and I know I should go but I dont and there is no reason for it at all.  I do pray when times are going bad, rough, and so on but I also pray when times are good and I thank the good lord everyday for what I do have.... it might not be much but I have what I need and I thank God for that.  If people would put Christ back into their life I think this would be a better country to live in.  These atheist; I know of  a few and hate to admit but one was my father and he changed his mind real quick when they life flighted my sister to a hospital and we thought we was going to lose her.... first time I seen my Dad cry and pray to God!  My sister doenst believe in what you cant see and I have argued with her over and over  about this and it doesnt do any good but I have a feeling one of these days something will happen in her life and she will pray to God just like my father did.  My whole family uses Gods name in vein and I hate it.... well I shouldnt hate .. but I dont like it.  I even tell them they shouldnt say his name like that but it goes in one ear and out the other.  I am NOT like that... and Im glad that I have the Lord and God in my life.  The way I feel is if you dont have God and Christ in your life ... what do you have????  My answer to that is ....YOU HAVE NOTHING!!!!  But this is my opinion and how I feel .. I know that everyone has their own opinions and I know I am far from being perfect but I do believe in God and Jesus and NOTHING  will ever change that!!!
TAKE CARE AND GOD BLESS EVERYONE!!!!

It is a nice sentiment and a good write up but I don't actually agree with it. Sorry. :-)

Studies have shown that education level os what plays an important role in successful marriages. The divorce rate among college graduates is much lower than that of those who don't have college degrees.

They've also shown that Atheists have one of the lowest divorce rates of all groups; the Japanese I beleive have the lowest. Go figure.

Good communication skills, good self esteem, a healthy sex life with an open dialogue, a responsible nature and the willingness to support each other. THIS is what makes for a good marriage (after 18 years of marriage I can attest to this. Add in a healthy allotment of "Yes Dears" and you'll be fine. :-).

Religion and God CAN play a valuable role in a marriage by providing a positive social group and belief system for support... if they are positive support systems (not all are. Take the Fred Phelps group Or the Dominionist/ Reconstructionist Christians).

Oh, not to be a nudge, but Darwin actually didn't admit he was wrong on his death bed. This is one of those stories that have made the rounds but it has no basis in fact.

Of course he likely reflected on God on his deathbed. The Christian faith in its Anglican form was an important part of his culture and of his own life, regardless of his understanding of it. Why wouldn't he speak of it to a believer without emphasizing his non-literal interpretation or rejection of it?

That Darwin rejected the faith, as literal truth, does not imply that he thought it useless. What he thought in his last moments whether of God or not... I hope it gave him some comfort.

Savas, I could only say to you, to leave the theorys, everyone elses opinion to the side, read the book yourself and have individual conversations with god, if it is only to ask him to show you truth.  This is where you learn your truths. With a personal walk, relationship, not thru someone elses experiences.

Savas, I lived in Japan for awhile and mingled with quite a few of the Japanese ladies because I was helping to teach English with them and from what I observed not only with them but the culture in general is that the divorce rate is so low because the women are very subservient and submissive to the men. (It's still a pretty chauvinistic society, in my opinion.)The men often times (not always) are even abusive in the relationship, whether physically or verbally. Even if they're not, they tend to be workaholics and alcoholics and treat their wives as second class and the wives accept that for the most part. They rarely speak out against their husbands or their treatment but many, many of them are lonely, let me tell you.
I also got a good close up look at a society that is godless (for the most part) and saw a lot of darkness. There's a lot of suppression. You could almost feel it. Yes, I loved the Japanese people and loved my time over there. I got pretty close to a couple of the missionaries over there, too. They can tell you about the suppression and how life changing it is when they introduce the Lord to them and the freedom they experience! They can tell you story after story of the women who got brave enough to leave their alcoholic, abusive, emotionally detached husbands. Again, I'm not saying they're all like that but we saw it over and over and over. One of the missionaries we are friends with is Japanese herself, married to an American and they choose to live over there to help others find the Lord. My Japanese friend's family disowned her for awhile there because she married an American and a Christian at that! They refused to see them for years until after the children came. They've slowly come around now. Why would my friend do that? Why would she be willing to leave her family, culture and everything she was raised in? Because she found something she had never had before. She found something that changed her life so radically it changed her foever. She found the Lord. Now she wants to share that with all her other countrymen. They have dedicated their lives to sharing the gospel over there now. Not an easy task. But again I ask, why do that? Until you've had that encounter with the Lord yourself you may never understand how real, how powerful, how loving, how close He really is and how much He loves each and every one of us, so much He was willing to die for us. It's a step of faith, or as some would say, a leap of faith to reach out to this mysterious God but it is oh so worth it. He is REAL! He really is! :)

Amen, Cat woman, April, Teko and Bold, I agree 100%, without Christ, we have nothing, oh sure, the "enemy" may give us things on earth, and all will be rosy, but in the end, it is Jesus that counts, and I would rather have rough times on earth and have an eternity of happiness with Jesus. I STILL say marriage, or anything can not work without our Lord, we are not to be independent of Him, He wants us to count on him for EVERYTHING.

Savas, I respect your beliefs and thoughts, but, I would prefer if you continued with your ideas on a happy marriage, etc on a new thread, this way, others can see it too, no offense, but, I would prefer it this way. Thank you. :>)

Have a blessed day everyone.

Let us also remember, that Satan is the one that provides doubt, skepticism, etc. God takes the blinders off.  Without wanting to c truth, no matter what, we wont.  We follow one of two masters. God or Satan. That is our free will. Followers of Christ are the salt of the earth, the light in the darkness. The marriage vows are taken, traditionally in the presence of God, or if you will , let no man put asunder what God has joined together.  Unfortunately a lot of people leave God at the Alter instead of allowing him to lead in the relationship that he blessed.  We all know, we have not the wisdom nor the understanding to be able to successfully do this for long. The bible also warns against a believer marrying an unbeliever for the same reason. Nowadays, the main problem is God just is not invited period. I believe we are also coming upon the time that god will quit quietly calling. The window will not be open forever.

Romans 1:21-23 (New International Version)
"For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles."

Psalm 81:12
"So I gave them over to the stubbornness of their heart, To walk in their own devices."

Romans 1:28-32
"And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper, being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice; they are gossips,  slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful;  and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them."
