Questions about thyroid issues

Aug 26, 2013 - 12 comments

So i know there's a few ladies on here that have issues with their thyroid, and was wondering what some of your symptoms are. The reason i'm asking is cause i'm wondering if it's become an issue for me.

I did an online quiz for thyroid disease, and it came back that i answered 12 of the 33 questions as possible thyroid disease indicators. Which is 36%.

Some of the ones i answered yes too were
Irritability - this was i think the big one. I've been having crazy mood swings and really bad irritability
Fatigue
I feel like there's something stuck in my throat, but no matter how much i drink, it doesn't go away
Experienced infertility - took 18 months to conceive preston. While it was only 3 months tops with reilly

Those are just ones i can remember off the top of my head.

I know that these symptoms can be caused by other things, so just wondering if it's something i should get checked out. Any input would be great

Weight gain.  Dry skin.  Longer cycles.  Mild depression.

Those are some that I experienced when my thyroid was slow.

Hmmm my skin has been more dry the last little bit. Not sure if it's related or not, but i've been going through lip balm like crazy.
Haven't noticed a change in my cycles. But i'm on the bcp, so i'm not sure if i will

Oh one of the other things i've noticed is my hair coming out in clumps. I can clog up the drain cause so much hair comes out.

I don't know about the depression part, but some days i just feel off. Like i'm not myself

Oh yes!  Thinning hair is on the list too.  Isn't it grand?  blah.

The depression is associated is typically on the mild side.  Otherwise it would scream out at ya and you'd treat the depression.  It is more like dysthymia and women often don't associate it to their thyroid.  But it often goes hand in hand with a slow thyroid.  Good times.

Mine actually just regulated itself back to normal.  I never went on medication.  It was about a year and a half to two years.  I also had an issue with making too much estrogen at the time which also regulated itself without medication.  What type of birth control are you on?  Is it estrogen based?

I would get a tsh, t3 and free t4 for start.  Sure can't hurt and you sound like you might have thyroid issues.

I'm assuming it's estrogen based because it contains 2 female sex hormones. I've been on it before and never had an issue with it, so i don't think it's that.

The hair part *****, cause i have baby fine hair to start.

So do i just go to my doctor and ask to have my thyroid checked? She won't think i'm crazy or something will she?

Depression is a major symptom of hypothyroidism, as is anxiety, though many of the lists don't include these two symptoms.  Many doctors want to treat with anti-depressants, when all they really need is thyroid hormones.  Cold intolerance and high cholesterol are also symptoms, along with difficulty conceiving.

I agree that you need to get TSH, T3 and Free T4 - only make sure that T3, is also Free, or you will get total, which is not the same and is not as informative.  You should also test for thyroid antibodies to determine whether or not you have Hashimoto's, which is an autoimmune thyroid condition and the most prevalent cause of hypothyroidism.

The hair loss *****! I totally agree! In the last week, I have lost a ton of hair. So depressing. :( Constipation is another fun symptom. Infertility is frequently caused by having an underactive thyroid. I'm starting to treat mine (Hashimoto's) and try to raise the dose (sustained release T3). Important note: You need to have good adrenal support when treating the thyroid. Otherwise when your metabolism is raised by the thyroid meds, it will tax the adrenals (which may already be weak) and that can be quite uncomfortable.

I recently discovered a way to treat my adrenals without taking hydrocortisone. It's called adrenal cortex extract. It comes from a cow much like Armour Thyroid or NatureThroid. It doesn't have any hormones in it but it helps the body with healing the adrenal glands so they can function and make the right amounts of hormones. Having very irregular temps is frequently a sign of weak adrenals. The best way to test adrenal function is well a 24 hour saliva cortisol test. The only doctors who order that kind of thing are naturopaths or integrative medicine drs. But the adrenal cortex extract can be bought without a prescription.

Everyone with thyroid issues should look into Adrenal Fatigue. That is frequently the cause of the underactive thyroid in the first place. The thyroid is forced to slow down because the weak adrenals can't handle the normal metabolic rate. I read an interesting article about adrenals affecting fertility the other day. I will try go find it and post it tonight.

I have experienced the cold sensitivity. I remember when we were camping last month my dh and older son were running around in shorts and no shirt. I spent most of the week in pants and sweater. But it's not on a regular basis though.

I haven't been having constipation, but quite the opposite. I did not think i could poop so much! (Ahem sorry for the tmi).

With the amount of hair i've lost, i swear i could make a wig.

With all the info that you ladies have given me, i think i'm going to get it checked out. Can't hurt anything. Thank you so much :-)
