Living with Diabetes

May 12, 2009 - 12 comments

I have really gotten my diabetes under control these last 2 months.  It was very hard but I am finding that I dont miss the carbohydrates as much.  I never thought I could eat a meal without having bread.  I also never thought I could stop eating Pasta at least 1-2 times a week but I have really got this under control.  I just need to keep it up.

My last visit at the doctor was great, she was very impressed with my number for my A1C.  She said the number was better than someone without diabetes. So I feel great.

Did you give up pasta and bread completely? Or did you switch to whole grain versions? My parents are diabetic and I am having the hardest time trying to get them to switch from white rice to brown rice.

I had given up break and pasta at that time completely and kept taking my medications, metphormin and my sugars were so great.  I have begun to eat wheat bread again and white rice, not as much and not as much pasta as I used to and it seems it is staying under control.  Going with out the breads and white rice, potatoes, etc is very hard.  My father is also diabetic and insulin dependent and he is struggling so hard to get away from the  bad carbs.  I just try to encourage him to eat less of the bad carbs, like cutting his portions in half and eating smaller amounts of high sugar fruits than usual and stick to alot of lean meats and vegetables.  he struggles but is finding more low blood sugar readings these days than before.

It is simple. Do not eat anything with flour or sugar in it.

DIABETIES IS A DIEASE EITHER YOU CONTROL IT, OR IT WILL CONTROL YOU. UNFORTUNATELY, IF IT CONTROLS YOU, THE COMPLICATIONS COME, SUCH AS BLINDNESS, KIDNEY FAILURE, STROKES, HEART ATTACK. OR DEATH
YOUR NORMAL SUGAR IS BETWEEN 70-110; AND WHEN YOUR SUGAR GOES UP, IT BECOMES LIKE SYRUP.
THE HIGHER THE NUMBER, THE MORE THICKER YOUR BLOOD BECOMES. THIS IS WHAT CAUSES ALL THE COMPLICATIONS.
THE NUMBER ONE THING TO CONTROL IT IS KEEP A FOOD LOG OF WHAT YOU EAT.

I went for a very much needed check up to see if my cancer has reoccured and found out that my blood sugar level was 409 fasting.  The doctor sent me for another test to make sure that the test was true.  I have a glucometer at home because my endrocrinologist had me use one for awhile.  I have been monitoring it and I have had nothing under 300 to record.  I assume that I have diabetese.  Where would one go to learn about changing your eating habbits?  I am in my late 50's and I am in somewhat good shape. I know that I am supposed to keep away from breads, potatoes, sugar and rice.  At least that is what I have heard.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I know how hard it is to live with diabetes and watch someone you love die because of it. I have had it for the past nine years and i just recenlty in the past year started to get my life undercontrol. I have cut out all sweets and went and sodas and watch how much carbs i take in. Now all i need to do is lose some weight and get in shape and i think  that i will be able tp pull throught if anyone out there has any suggestions to help me lose this weight i would like to hear it

Hmmm I've been a dieabetic all my life and I eat what ever I want when I want I can do any thing my friends can do
being diebetic isent that hard...rnalura is right you need to control it or you will die
I have always been told I I'm going to lose a leg or something and I'm still going strong
you just need to work out a little and don't stress over it and take the right amount of insulin
but it's really not that hard haveing it
don't use it as an excuse and don't let it hold you back
that's what I live by
( sorry for bad spelling )

I have been a diabetic for 16yrs--I am on insulin and an oral medication.I have done fairly well keeping my A1C under 7.4 (the highest ever) My arthritis/psuedo gout attacks make my blood sugars hard to manage.Have to take more insulin. It's hard to get the blood sugars down even dieting.I do check my sugars 3x day.
