Uses:

This medication is a combination of vaccines. It is given to children between the ages of 6 weeks and 7 years old to prevent certain serious diseases: diphtheria, tetanus (lockjaw), pertussis (whooping cough), hepatitis B, and polio. Vaccination is the best way to protect (provide immunity) against these life-threatening diseases. Vaccines work by getting the body to make its own protection (antibodies).

Side Effects

Pain/swelling/redness at the injection site may occur. Mild fever, sleepiness, fussiness, and loss of appetite may also occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell the doctor or pharmacist promptly. Consult the doctor or pharmacist about the short-term use of acetaminophen to treat pain and fever caused by this vaccine. Remember that the doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to your child is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects. Tell the doctor immediately if any of these rare but serious side effects occur: high fever (105 degrees F/40 degrees C or higher), persistent crying (beginning within 48 hours of the injection and lasting longer than 3 hours), little or no response to sound/touch, numbness/tingling, unusual pain (such as shoulder pain), muscle weakness/floppy muscles, seizures. A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, seek immediate medical attention if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing. This is not a complete list of possible side effects. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact the doctor or pharmacist. Contact your doctor for medical advice about side effects. The following numbers do not provide medical advice, but in the US, you may report side effects to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) at 1-800-822-7967. In Canada, you may report side effects to Health Canada at 1-866-234-2345.
