An ultrasound performed on May 25 shows a 4.7x3.6x3.1 cm septated cyst in my right ovary. I have been suffering extreme vaginal pain during intercourse and heavy brownish discharge for many months now ( more than 10 months). Iam very concern at the size of the cyst and the lenght of time I did not attend my problem. Im 40 yrs old and had a hycterectomy about 5 yrs ago after suffering acute pelvic inflamation (9 severe episodes in one yr. My doctor wants to use contraceptic treatment and to reapeat ultrasound to give the cyst a chance to resolve. Should I follow Dr. reccomendations or run for a 2nd opinion?

You don't say what your doctor's specialty is. Is he/she an OB/GYN or a GP? Did you have a transvaginal ultrasound? How was the diagnosis of ovarian cyst arrived at? Have you had a CA-125 test?

In any case, I think I'd get a second opinion, if possible from a gynecological oncologist. You will see that the ladies on this site will tell you that 99% of all ovarian masses are benign (especially in pre-menopausal women), but in order to put your mind to rest, you need to handle this aggressively.

Things will be fine -- let us know how things develop.

I agree, please get a 2nd opinion from a gyn/onc.  They are specialists and have seen everything.  Although 99% of ovarian cysts are benign, you should never ignore your symptoms.  Please get the medical attention that you need.  You are in my thoughts and prayers.  Godspeed

Hi, and I agree with the ladies. Chances are your cyst is benign, but if you've had symptoms for 10 months already, I wouldn't watch and wait any longer. Hope you feel better soon!

10 months is long enough to watch and wait, now it is time to take some action.  Get the opinion of a gyn/onc (they specialize in the female reproductive organs) and see what he/she has to say.  You are the only one who knows how you feel, do not be afraid to tell teh doctors that you want something done NOW!!  You are in my prayers.  Kasie

I agree with the others... 10 months IS a long time to wait. I am having trouble waiting 6 weeks after the first 'sighting' of my complex cyst to see if it is resolving. I don't think I could take a longer wait! I want to know what is happening inside of me and MOVE on it, if need be.

Take care of yourself!

Thanks you all for your support and comments. I must clarify: my DR is an OBGYN and today i went to lab for a blood sample for C-125.  Also started the contraceptive treatment.
