Hi John Hopkins does alot of research on LMP and LMP can have stages (I know someone with stage 3 and mine is stage 1). Borderline ovarian cancer comes in two types LMP and MPSC. MPSC is an agressive type of borderline and is hard to treat. John Hopkins have a message board just for this type. Sean on that board (she's one of the creators of the board)will likely recommend that anyone diag with LMP have a second opinion of their pathology by the specialist at John Hopkins. She was first diag with LMP only to find out it was MPSC. Those with LMP still need regular follow-ups for several years with CT scans and U/S. I'm still on 6 month follow-ups since 2002 and I have a CT scan every year.
It's better to be safe than sorry.
Debbie
I would definitely read the article on borderline tumors out of John Hopkins, I'll try to find the link for you.
Borderline or LMP is not cancer, and there is a very low chance it will ever be cancer.
I had one too, and I have spent a long time worrying and wondering what to do.
There is no evidence that total hysterectomy would help, you just need to watch and surgically remove any tumors that would develop. If you don't want to worry, hysterectomy is a choice, but this isn't "early cancer" and there is very little association between the LMP tumors and ovarian cancer, it is a very low percentage that ever end up cancerous. (Mine was ruptured in my abdomen and still my chance of having a cancerous tumor is less than 1%).
This is only the advice my gyn/onc has given me, please only follow your own doctor's advice. I can tell you that many people believe differently.
You are very lucky, as I was, that this all wasn't worse. Get informed, don't go too crazy trying to figure this all out, and God Bless you!!!!
Thank you grateful06 for that.
As for trying for the baby, I had three children with only one ovary all conceived naturally. I was told that the remaining ovary grows slightly to compensate for the loss.
I too would go down the close observation route (don't grow complacent). You could always have them removed post menopause.
Hi Diana, sorry you're going through all this and am glad you're getting a second opinion. LMP can be difficult to diagnosis and did your dr say if the washings came back as LMP or what?? You should find out - maybe you can get a copy of the pathology report. Have you thought of getting a second opinion on the pathology report too? Might be something to ask the second opinion about. Women who are in surgical menapause need only estrogen, HRT is both progestrone and estrogen.
I was diag. with LMP stage 1 a few years ago at age 33. Only one ovary was removed at the time. I opted for a TAH a year and a half later. I just didn't want to take the chance.
There are different schools of thought on this now especially with LMP. Besides I had terribly heavy periods that were making me miserable. I don't take estrogren (personal choice)and don't really have that many problems but I'm pretty alone in that as most surgically induced menapausal women have more problems with menapause.
Let us know how you make out on second opinion.
Debbie
