Thank you all so much for all your answers!!
This is in response to MickeyVickie...You are absolutely correct about the emotional impact on the female body. My husband is an acupuncturist and as far as I understand the belief within Chinese medicine is that women tend to develop growths due to their ability of stuffing emotions. This cyst arose directly after I went through a very emotional period in my life and I pray that you right that is nothing more than my already existent ulcer acting up again. But in the world of so much distress and the fear of cancer is something that is very prevelant for me. I am terrfied of this dis-ease and I wish I can shake it off because the fear of it seems to devour my mind.
With deep gratitude for everyones courage of being here for one another, Dechen
It is quite likely that you are suffering from more than one problem here.
At your age, ovarian cysts are common, and when a cyst is somewhat persistent as yours was, women can report symptoms of pain and discomfort for some time after the cysts have completely resolved. The resolution of a cyst leaves something akin to a "wound" on the ovary, and this must heal. Obviously, the larger the cyst, the larger the "wound" that must heal.
You have also been under a tremendous amount of stress. Your nausea and acid stomach sound like a description of the ulcer I developed while in college. I found the symptoms to be most noticeable at night and early morning. Remember that stress depresses your immune system, thus making you more likely to develop illnesses, such as ulcers. My gyn believes that stress also contributes to the gynocological upsets...like ovarian cysts.
Talk to your doctor, and tell him or her all of your complaints - not just the physical aches and pains but the mental and emotional stresses as well - and ask for advice on covering all the bases.
Also is the GYN you went to a specialist in oncology? They should be able to give you the best answers relating to cancer, I'd imagine
Again, I'm most definitely NOT a doctor, but based on what you've said, your symptoms are a sporadic pain on your right side, and recently some upset stomach symptoms, yes?
There are SO many things that can cause that--it seems like it's a good idea not to focus only on one particcular thing (ovarian cancer) but to consider other things as well--you might be missing another cause if you're only pursuing that one possibility.
As for the reliability of U/S, I don't know--I know other tools I've read about include a CT scan and laparascopy (a minor surgery that lets the dr look inside your abdomen and possibly remove anything suspicious they find there). Again, since i'm not a doctor I really can't say when or why these other tools are used.
You should bring up these issues with your doctor. But I really think you also should try to find ways to deal with your stress in the meantime, since that definitely makes pain and such worse--and can certainly cause stomach upset!
PS--I too am having pain mostly on my left side that's freaking me out too--so I know what it's like.
Just a thought... if the cyst was solid on your ultra sound, then the chances it would be cancer are increased. If it is a simple cyst - meaning it is fluid filled - that is a good sign. If your still worrying about this, maybe you should ask for a CA125 blood test. It's not used to diagnose Ovarian Cancer, and honestly, it's not too reliable in pre-menopausal women, but it's a good place to start. Keeping in mind that many benign conditions can cause it to be elevated (cysts, fibroids, endo etc..) if it did come back above normal, it's at least the Dr would look more into it. I wouldn't worry so much - cysts are so very common and although it seems surprising that something so small could cause so much grief, it is possible. Good luck in your quest...
Becky
Thank you so much for responding. I don't think i have ever known fear the way I know it at this moment.
How reliable is a U/S and CT scan?
Thank you so much again.
With deep gratitude for your presence, Dechen
Hi:
I'm really sorry to hear about the stress you've been under.
I am NOT a doctor, but I wanted to share a few things I've learned
1. Ovarian cysts are extremely common and in the vast majority of cases, particularly in younger women, are benign
2. If you've been checked out multiple times and the doctors all agree that they don't see anything that makes them suspicious of cancer, you should take that as a good sign!
3. Have you considered that your symptoms may be caused by a problem with your digestive system, not your ovaries? Your digestive organs (e.g., colon) are positioned very close to your reproductive organs and I think symptoms for the 2 can often be mixed up. Maybe you should consider talking to a gastroenterologist as well as a gyn?
I hope you can find a way to get over your stress! I know when I get extremely stressed and worried (which I often do!) my symptoms become that much worse.
