Need guidance with 3yr old son

Yesterday I had my son at the doctors for a sick visit (he'll be 3 in july),he has had a runny nose and cough for months.  They want to do allergy testing on him, which is fine.  But while I was at the doctors, my son was completely out of control.  The doctor , whom i respect highly and only see him, told me he is going to step out for a minute so I can have a minute with him.  I was completely embarrassed.  And this is not the first time, it's like everytime we go in public, he exhibits some type of unappropriate  behavior.  For the first 2 years, he was an extremely good kid, I couldn't wait to get pregnant again.  If only all children could be so wel behaved as him.  Then he turned 2, and it is like someone turned a switch on him the I can't control.  He is not always bad, he love me reading to him, coloring, stickers, and playing.  He is also very smart.  I work with him alot.  He knows his abc, to say and to recognize each letter, colors, shapes, and can almost write his name.  I am very proud of him.  My husband and I do stuggle with disaplining him.  We grew up with our behinds getting tanned when we do something wrong, now you are put behind bars if you do that today.  So unless it is something harmful to him, we use time out.  Yet it doesn't seem to phase him.
Well back to my question.  The doctor told me that he is showing signs of AD/HD, and recomends that we take him to a child psycologist  I was in shock.  I just thlought that he was a boy who had energy and creativity.  What do you think.  Is it something i need to worry about, should we take him or just give him some time to grow.  Also can allergies affect his bahavior and what should i do if he has an allergy?

Thanks in advance for replying

He might not have ADD it gets overdiagnosed and underdiagnosed all the time basically misdiagnosed. It is good your kid does have lots of energy though, I think. Have you read any psychology books on dealing with kids like this. I studied psychology for a couple of years as a undergrad and man trust these studies they are very helpful. I don't have any kids but thought I would put in my two cents. Plus why not go see a psychologist, this isn't the dark ages anymore almost all things like anxiety ADD, OCD whatever are just genetically inherited like having blue eyes.
