phlegm and food allergies

by ljoan, Jul 08, 2009 05:11PM
My 9 year old daughter has coughed up phlegm for the past 5 years.  Sometimes white, clear, yellow.  I started keeping a journal and realized she was doing this 3-6 times everyday.  at the allergist, she only tested positve to dust mites, dogs and cockroached. She was negative to foods including dairy and wheat.  I went ahead and did a 3 week elimination diet of diary and wheat.  By the end of it, she was coughing up phlegm 1-2 times for day.  This may be a lung issue and not an allergy issue.  Before I expose her to tons of radiation from a CT scan, I am exploring all other options.  Has anyone experienced over production of phlegm white or yellow in color on a daily basis because of food allergies or other allergies?  She sounds raspy and can feel it in her throat.  She only gives one llittle cough and out it comes.  She never has coughed at night. If she didn't have the cough, she would be well.  She is not sickly at all and has tons of energy.

Hi

I'm not a doctor, but a mom to 4 kids (3 of whom have had bad allergies and 2 asthmatics).

See if your allergist will let your daughter go on a total food elimination diet.  My daughter did that at age 8 and found out chocolate was her problem food causing neurological problems (migraine, word retrieval and joint pain)!!!   She used to get mucosal sweling from many other foods when younger and is asthmatic, too.

She did rice, lamb, water for 5 days and then ev. 3 days added in one more food.

You can use our new food diary which is great to journal this and her symptoms.  It's simple to use.

If you do a total food thing this way you'll see within that first week if her symptoms go away, then it may be a food but it took 6 weeks to get to the chocolate ... the schools added it to their menu at lunch and she was drinking it daily!!!!!!

Swelling takes some time, too, to go away and milk takes 3 wks to rid itself from our body fully.

Pls. keep in touch and let us know what the doc says and how she's doing.

Did they rule out asthma or do a  PFT test for inflammation?????

C~
