May it be ALS or sth?

Hello there

I am writing from London. At the beginning of January 2010, I started experiencing muscle twitches which spreaded all over my body in a week time. I was horrified after checking internet sources and found out the link with twitches and ALS. I have been checked by so far 5 neurologists (2 ALS experts) and 2 EMGs done, all came up normal. I was told that I have benign fasciculation syndrome and anxiety disorder syndrome. Two months after, I also started feeling a painful and sore right calve muscle and rarely burning feeling. I had a brain and neck MRI done to rule out MS and it came up normal. The only abnormality was a small 5mm cyst (which is believed to be cytercus) on the left frontal part of my brain. I am under Cipralex medication for my anxiety and I am having less twitches for the last one month. However, the soreness and pain in the right calf muscle still concerns me about ALS. Should I go for a third EMG. Or may it be related to the cyst in my brain as it is close to the motor and sensory parts?

Thank you very much for your response. I was checked by a neurophysiolog specialised in MND yestarday and he believes that I should undergo a mental treatment as soon as possible due to intensive anxiety.

Btw, I am so sorry to hear that you have ALS. Hope, there will be a solution soon for everyone suffering this. Please let me know if I can help you for any kind of support.

Thanks

Hi,

I have ALS & can attest that your calf pain is not symptomatic of the disease. ALS does not "hurt" as the nerves die, unless you consider the pain from muscle spasticity. That pain is transient, and feels like a "charley horse."

I would NOT waste time or money on another emg. I would suspect that your anxiety issues are part of the equation in your concern. The calf pain is most likely unrelated to your fasciculations. but it is always best to see your  physician for an examination.

take care,
gramps
