How best to clean his teeth and care for them

It takes 24 hours for the liquid dental plaque in the mouth of a dog to become hard and impossible to eliminate without dental scaling.  That is why it is necessary to brush teeth every day.  If your dog will not allow you to brush his teeth, than Hills Science Diet T/D is an alternative.  T/D actually scales the teeth by it's very fibrous, brush-like texture.  You can use this diet or equivalent dental diet either as his only food or in combination with a food that he already enjoys and is presently eating.

If the dental disease is very severe than a dentistry should be performed by your vet.
