Help… our Yorkie is congested…

Hi there and Happy New Year. We have a little 2-year old Yorkie that weighs approximately 4 pounds. She has never had any health issues and has been the perfect dog however as of Saturday she has been honking, sneezing and seems to be congested.

Is there anything I should do or could do? Thank you.

A concerned Yorkie Mommy

It sounds like your dog may have kennel cough (tracheobronchitis).  It is a highly treatable condition and very common.  She will need antibiotics and cough medicine, so please take her to the vet.

Actually we are currently out of town however I did contact our Vet and she also said it could be kennel cough, which is odd since our dog is an indoor dog and is never around other dogs. She also said it could be a nasty cold...  since we cannot make it in right now she recommended I get some Benadryl and give her 1/2 teaspoon 3 times a day. Ever since we begun to give her the medicine she seems to have gotten much better. Nevertheless we will continue to monitor her and hopefully she continues to make progress if not we will definitely be visiting our Vet as soon as we get back in town. Thank you.
