dental materials allergy

by promethius, May 26, 2007 12:00AM
I had an immediate allergic reaction with dental work some years ago- lips swelled up, giant hives on face, throat felt funny. One patch test found reaction to eugenol ("clove oil") used in dental products. But that allergist retired and it has not been easy to pursue allergy testing to dental materials.

I suspect I also react to plastics and or resins and or glues and or amines used in dental restorations. In addition, I get allergic response (immediate raised red rash with small blisters) to surgical tape and most bandaids (I do not appear to have a latex allergy).

One question I have is where might one go for testing? In Europe it is fairly standard to have patch tests using a "dental panel" consisting of many of the most common dental allergins (such as methylmacralate) for patients as well as dental personnel, but I have not seen anything here in the US. In addition, I assume patch testing only looks for immediate reactions but I also appear to have delayed hypersensitivy reactions to the materials as well. (increase in basophils, body temp etc. Ertheyma inside mouth and selling at the sides of the lips continue.) Comments on how to test for delayed reactions to dental materials would help as well, and any other suggestions on the situation are welcome. Finally, I would be curious if others with allergy to the glues and plastics on surgical tape and bandaids also report allergies to dental glues and plastics.

Thanks kindly for your help.
