Why does my 3 year old autistic son have trouble transitioning out of the water especially during swim time?
My son is having trouble getting out of the water when he swims me and his mother have tried everything from toys to redirecting. Nothing works!!!! My son also doesn't yet talk full sentences so if we talk to him he just repetitively says no ,no ,no please help????

Hi there.  Kids with autism often have sensory issues and swimming feels really good to a sensory kid.  It's deep pressure and muscle work and tactile all in one and kids LOVE that.  My son has sensory integration disorder and swimming has been a blessing.  It's like an occupational therapy session for him.  He's now 12 and swims competitively so good things can come out of the love for water.

Transitions are always hard for kids but especially kids on the spectrum.  They have visual things to help like a clock where you set it so this red part disappears as time runs out.  They then can SEE this and it helps.  Show it at intervals as the end time approaches. I used a digital watch.  I would say when the last number is 5, we have to go.  I'd show the watch at intervals and every minute the last five minutes.

Are you working with a developmental specialist?  Talk to them about these transitions as well.  good luck
