What about a child who is 5 years old, has begun to wet and defecate in his pants and bed, slapped a child in the face at school, talks about an unknown friend, and until the last few weeks been docile, sweet and humble?

This behavior could be a way to gain attention. However, if the child was otherwise non-problematic, then maybe there has been something in school or at home or with playmates that has upset him tremendously. You need to make an attempt to find this out. Other than this it could also be a behavior disorder. Please consult a counselor to get to the root of the problem. Take care!
