my sons school says get tested for aspergers?

Where do I start

My son has always had some sort of behavior issues, which may be credited to a rocky life. His father was overly tough towards him, and abusive towards me. He may remember that. I left him when he was 4.

My son didnt start talking properlly until he was 4 I would say. Delayed speech. But that is also in the family.

Lets fast forward to now. His behavior is increasingly worse. he is 7 in June. He will never tell me anything. He is easily angered. He is becoming violent at school. Throwing chairs. Yelling at teachers. He has been removed several times from class. Once my mother had to literally remove him from school as he wouldnt leave when school ended. Punching her. 2 teachers had to escort him also. its weird as he loves his grandma so.Twice now I have had to chase him to get him to come with me, and pull him to my car.

I guess yesterday they moved the desks around, and he could just not grasp that concept. it upset him. there has been times he has become angered at me and thrown my stuff out of the house. locked me out. hit his 4 year old siter (4 in may) and not cared. showed no remorse. they say at school he at times has food sensory sensitivity. i have never noticed. i dont know what it means, i should probably look it up. i am wondering about aspergers as the special education teacher at his school suggested it.

when he was younger he use to have these weird twitches. his eyes would roll back in the back of his head. his arms stiff, head tilted back. But then it just stopped.

dont know what my point is. i guess how do they determine if it is as. how do i go through their symptoms and see if he matches up. or is it conincidence. his dr apt is on wednesday to discuss behavior. and ill bring up aspergers. what do i say to them?

Im only 24, i have 2 kids I raise on my own. I do have help. but i could use some help/advice from someone more knowledgable in this situation.

thank you, cirisa

I should probably also mention he has issues with social interactions. he is violent towards other kids. hyper. he hits and just acts, well obnoxious. at this point he has no friends actually. never invited anywhere

As i read this posts i am finding more issues. he cannot tie his shoe. just learmed how to ride a bike with trainging wheels 1 years ago. at school he told them his younger brother burned down in our old house. he doesnt have a younger brother. i always knew he had bhavior issues, but what exactly, i dont know .

I just wanted to add about the strange twitch, eyes rolling back and jerking.  I have a friend who had the same thing with her son.  It would be over within a couple of seconds and happened once or twice a month.  It turned out it is some kind of epilepsy.  I don't know if it is relevant in your case, but just wanted to mention it.

If you ask for testing and m-team evcaluation  in writing, the school has to do it by federal IDEA law.

We have problems with our state insurance.  First we needed to find Psyc who are accepting new patients, then we need to find those who accept medicaid/state insurance This we found impossible.  Also the state goes thru some kind of HMO, so they have to be in the network and get refered by primary care physician.  YUCK.

If you get a medical evaluation, take it to the school.  This medical eval will give you ammunition to back up your request for a proper m-team eval.

thank you all for your suggestions. his school never mentioned testing him, as it was not a formal suggestion, basically the special ed yeacher helped me drag him to the car and that was when she ased if he had ever been tested for autism, and that he seem to her to asperger tendencies. she explained small tidbits and then the conversation ended.

I will talk to her further today, his doctor wednesday. based off what he says ill go from there. luckily i have state insurance so he can go to a behaviorist, and get evaluated for minimum cost for me.

the whole loop on his speech is speech delay runs in the family. i had deafness and speech delay, aunt speech delay, sister hearing delay.

i believe i have his tics on tape so i will dig those up! thank golly for technology. but with his seizures i did see a neuro. he told me they may have been stressed induced. the moment we got back to the car my so "ticked" for about 3 minutes. i immediately called up that dr.... his response was, lets just watch it. soon after he stopped it. but i showed his regular dr the tape about a month later. he immediately saw how abnormal it was. but since he stopped i was just suppose to watcch yet again. i was young, around 20. my son 2-3.

whats horrible is i lived in arizona last year and half of this. social services and a child psychologist asked for an iep.  but the school said since his home problems were not so badly happening at school, that he didnt need one. well now look at my child. i wait for the phone call every day that he is being sent home, or being taken to a safe room. (a smaller room with less opportunity to outburst on himself or others when he gets into his mood)

so i guess a good question to ask is, who should i seek an evaluation from, his dr, wo his school.  the special eds teacher is documenting this so i can take it to his dr. she is the one who noticed food problems, routine problems, etc. i just notice behavioral problems

Hugs.

I'm impressed!  As a single parent too!

How much help is the school?  Will they m-team him?  If they won't you can request an m-team (multi-disciplinary team) evaluation.  The school system should do it free of charge.  Did the school system mention it first?  If they did, they are on the ball and know what to do.

Since he started talking at 4, this rules out Aspergers.  He could be somewhere else on the spectrum, however.

Talk to his teacher about an m-team evaluation.  Talk to the special education case manager for that school also.  If they are unresponsive, go up the ladder.  Talk to the principal, school psychologist, school speech therepist or OT, or PT.   You can ask if your child to be evaluated for special needs.

If you get no response from the school, go to the school district office.   Put a request for an m-team evaluation in writing.  Be detailed but concise about some of the symptoms you observe.  Request an multi-disciplinary team (m-team) evaluation for your child.  Address this request to as many administrators as you can.   Start with the school Principal.  Also write the same letter to the director of Special education services (the title may vary in your district) cc to the district superintendent.   After the district receives this letter,     They have 90 days to get it done after they receive the request.!

Once the evaluation process is complete,  they will want to meet with you do discuss the findings.  Ask for the written reports of their findings IN ADVANCE of the meeting.  It's you right.  Please promise me this cirisa:   BRING SOMEONE.   Bring a friend.  This can be a very emotional meeting.  You need someone to take notes and track with the rest of the meeting when you may not have the emotional strength to do.

When the m-team meeting is concluded, they may want to jump right into the IEP (Individual Educational Plan) meeting.   This is when they make a strategy or plans and goals for your him.   Ask to hold off for a while until you have absorbed the findings of the m-team meeting.   Say this:  "If it's all the same to you, I'd lilke to re-schedule the IEP meeting for later"  or "I don't feel prepared for planning and goal setting at this time".

After all, you just heard what they determined.   This also gives you time to cope with the findings and re-group and come up with your own goals and research strategies for yourself.  Then you can come in prepared.

You have a right to ALL records and test results etc.  ASK FOR THEM.  Start a folder with these records.  Watch this folder get fattter and fatter with time.  Trust me, you will need these records years (or decades) later.

One last thing, NOTHING should be done in your child's placement, planning, or evaluation without parents written consent.  If you don't feel right about something, don't feel pressured to give your jane hancock.
