I have full body Sjogrens, Firbomyalgia, Thyroid and multiple vitamin and mineral deficiencies as well as arthritis and chronic back pain. Thanks for letting me join the group. I would love to talk with others who have multiple autoimmune issues.

Hey revmother.

Very helpful. Because of your family history the following is suspect::

You may have IGg or IGa anti-gliadin antibodies. (There are two main groups of proteins in gluten, called the gliadins and the glutenins).
Up to 50% of people sensitive to gluten have this.
Also about 50% of gluten sensitive people are of the HLA DQ 2 or 8 serotype ( gluten sensitivity genes-not necessarily just for celiacs )
Organic grains do not necessarily remove the possibility of sensitivity, but non-organic comes with many unwanted extras, such as... well just read the following:

Look into Gliadin test (urine), by Cyrex labs. They test 12 forms-not just the alpha ordered by most doctors- of gliadins regarding gluten intolerance (not necessarily just digestive).
Now they can also test which part of the body is affected.
Most hypothyroid sufferers have gluten intolerance and don't even know it!
The gluten molecules-MAINLY FROM GMO GRAINS!!!- resemble the TPO(Thyroid Peroxidase - an enzyme necessary for the signalling Thyroid hormone production) molecules and thus the immune system in its response against gluten, attacks the TPO in the Thyroid also!

Certain things you need to rule out ASAP are:
Low gastric acid levels! GERD (same symptoms for low and high stomach acid but much more common with low stomach acid, yet the conventional
treatment (mostly without proper testing is PPI and anti-acid drugs-HUGE and dangerous mistake if low stomach acid, with only temporary relief but  dangerous long term effects!!!)
Low acid conditions would explain B12 deficiency, as intrinsic factor necessary for B12 absorption depends on adequate stomach acid levels!
I suggest you look into:
Sublingual B12 in a form of methylocobalamin (never cyanocobalamin, form which cyanide molecules bind with your body's potassium and forms
to create over time potassium cyanide which releases a very toxic gas,
hydrogen cyanide gas, which in turn reduces the body's ability to utilize oxygen!) You levels must be over 500pg/ml despite "normal" lab ranges in N.America as there are too many possible neurological issues at levels below that!

Also you may want to look into sublingual D3, 5000 IU daily. There are no toxicity concerns, even with much higher doses.
Also if your D3 does not increase, you may want to get your doctor to
investigate underlying causes for this, like ( low cholesterol levels, low fat diet, leaky gut syndrome -as I mentioned above-, obesity (which lowers its biological activity), VDR issues -where your D3 blood levels have to increase substantially!) and is linked with Hashimotos and other autoimmune conditions, high cortisol levels -usually from stress, and some drugs such as anti-acids, steroids, blood thinners etc.

Your B12 and D3 deficiencies are underlying causes of many conditions
Also B2 deficiency is associated with many impaired metabolic and physiological functions in the body, affecting energy levels, causing other deficiencies due to poor digestion, impaired immune function, lower glutathione recycling , so less anti-oxidant capacity( glutathione is the master anti-oxidant in the body!) and on and on.

You may also want to look into B2 (riboflavin) and B12 (methylocobalamin) injections that will deliver these directly into the blood stream.

One more thing to rule out is Leaky Gut Syndome.
There's a test (urine) called PEG for this. Ask your DO, or the Naturopathic doctor, when you do find one.

I think most of your conditions could be controlled, improved and even go into remission, but you need to get these deficiencies dealt with EFFECTIVELY and avoid gluten (100%) like the plague!
Also other foods could be cross-reactive with gluten. A big percentage of gluten sensitive people. I think 50% or more are also sensitive to dairy because of cross-reactivity where the body reacts to dairy the same as gluten.

Your healthy thyroid function depends on ample support, like iron, iodine,
selenium etc. You must also know your Free T3. Free T4 and Reverse T3 in order to properly assess thyroid function on the CELLULAR level!
Serum testing is plain rubbish, if you are still not getting results from your
thyroid meds!
Best way to self-test cellular thyroid function is the old Dr.Barnes Basal temperature test, which is not used by conventional Endos anymore!
What a pity! Just do a search for this and follow the simple instructions, precisely.

One thing to watch out for is adrenal fatigue, which only an ND (maybe your open minded DO also) will help with. It's not recognized by conventional medicine until it becomes an adrenal crisis!

In adrenal fatigue, low thyroid function is secondary, so continuing  treating it normally with thyroid medication and ignoring the adrenals is contra-indicated and it will backfire! It's like adding fuel to the fire.
Not within the scope of conventional medicine, unfortunately.

Magnesium deficiency is very difficult to correct, even more difficult when you have B2 deficiency and other possible digestive and /or absorption issues.
At best most oral supplements have an absorption efficiency of 3-5%.
Try daily (at first)transdermal magnesium oil treatments for best absorption, which bypasses the digestive tract and goes directly into the tissues through the skin. If you need details let me know.

If your potassium levels do not increase, you may need to get your doctor to administer potassium  intravenously.

Please take your time to read all this, as it is a lot of information to absorb.
You may also want to print it off and give a copy to your DO or new ND,
but please note that even if  my comments & this information is very well researched and based on many years of training, studying and holistic consulting, it is not intended as a substitute for medical advice.

Feel free to post again or contact me by pm any time!

Best wishes.
Niko

I have Vit B2 and B12 deficiency as well as Vit D deficiency...these are related to hypothyroidism and Fibro...I take supplements. Due to my leg and back issues I take potassium and magnesium supplements. I have been on a gluten free diet for 8 months now and when I try non organic gluten I get bloated, have pain with my diverticulitis and increased GERD. My Gastro specialist says I do not have Celiac but gluten is like an allergy (multiple generations with gluten trouble). The hard part is sorting out what I need to take less than why. SamE has really helped with my arthritis in knees as well as mild depression from having to be mostly home bound. The trouble with multiple disorders besides lots of specialists is that they overlap. I am trying to find a naturopathic doctor. My PCP is a DO which is very helpful as he is open minded about alternative medicine. Once I can drive again (had ankle surgery) I will be getting back to my acupuncturist (who has medical degrees in both Eastern and Western medicine) and my massage therapist.

Hi revmother and welcome to the A/I Disorders Community.

I currently have almost no health concerns or issues, as I have managed on my own to take care of my multiple health issues a long time ago!

However, I can still offer you support and suggestions, as I have taken a keen interest in complex medical conditions, where conventional;l medicine has very few answers.

Enough about me. Why do you have multiple unresolved mineral and vitamin deficiencies.
This alone is undisputedly one fundamental route to chronic disease, as the body will not function and will not sustain itself without proper nutritional support.
Can you give me some details as of what is going on, what deficiencies do you know  you have  and what is being done presently to correct them.
Are there any digestive, and/or G/I issues or food sensitivities ?

I will be able to connect many dots for you, but I will wait first for your answer and if you have any information that  you think would be helpful, please post it at your earliest convenience. There may be many more questions, so please bear with me, for the next little while

Take care.
Niko
