Unexplained leg pain

My granddaughter is seven. She has complained about severe, generalized leg pain which makes her cry. She can't locate the pain but says her legs ache really badly. Laying down helps but takes a full twenty minutes or so. Also, a baby aspirin. Seems to lessen the pain. The pediatrician dismissed it as "growing pains"  but did no testing.
Any knowledge would be appreciated.

Hi! For starters never give aspirin to a child under 12. Reyes syndrome while rare is a fatal condition linked to aspirin given to kids under 12. She is probably fine right now just don't give her any more aspirin. This is a clinical standard rule in pediatrics.  Ibuprofen or acetometophin are recommended.  Discuss dosage info with Pharmacist or Pediatrician and how to treat for breakthrough pain.
Additionally, warm baths, stretching or heating pad.

The diagnosis of growing pains is generally not recommended until other conditions are ruled out. It is supposed to be a diagnosis of exclusion.

Does your granddaughter respond to touch when in pain? (does massage, cuddling, touching help?)  Is the pain primarily in the late evening? If she doesn't like to be touched or doesn't respond well to being handled and moved while in pain then you should be suspicious of a more serious condition which warrants a full investigation.

hope she gets well soon!

Hi Rookiemed and welcome to the forum.

In the absence of other symptoms, there's very little to warrant any systemic
or serious illness investigation.
Usually a clinical examination is all that is necessary, when generalized pain is the only complaint, even if acute at times, since many healthy children do experience such painful (benign pain) episodes during one time or another during their childhood.
Should the pain persist and new symptoms arise, or if the pain intensifies
substantially where her mobility is greatly impaired, then it might be wise to consult with a pediatric rheumatologist.

Best wishes to you and your granddaughter.

Niko
