Back pain and alcohol

My boyfriend is trying to quit drinking alcohol after many, many years. However, his mid-back on the right side hurts so bad he is ready to start drinking again. Is there anything he can do to help with this? He says this has happened in the past when he has tried to quit.

years of drinking prob messed up his liver and hes feeling the pain now.
get good life insurance on him,and go out and celebrate with a few cold ones.
he obviously has problems and he needs to take them seriously or hes not going to be around long enough to have to worry about it anyway.
