Have you tried sleeping with a pillow under your legs when on your back, and bt legs when on your side? Physical therapy works well to give you strecthes and muscle strengthning excercises to help support.

I have suffered from lower back pain for a number of years now and have seen chiropractors and massage therapists for help.

The following have been done to diagnose and help the situation:
1.  X-rays were taken (I am told these should be in the weaker spectrum of x-rays in order to minimise negative side effects).  It was found that I have degeneration of the cushioning between two of my lower vertebrae, and the chiropractor said that this may result in pinching of nerves.  He recommended regular visits to him for realignment of my spine.  He also suggested that I do special exercises for the lower back on a regular basis.
2.  Intense detoxification using AIM - Herbal Life products to rid my system - especially colon, lymph and organs in which toxins tend to accumulate - of toxins.  You wouldn't believe how good this left me feeling!!  The detox was quite unpleasant - I vomited several times the second day, and once the last day - but my body hasn't felt as good in years!  There was a notable reduction in my lower back pain.
3.  Use of Bio-Meridian ailment frequency diagnostic tool.  There is another such machine called Scio.  It apparently detects ailments by their characteristic frequencies, and then destroys them by sending an opposite frequency through the body.  The practitioner also gives the patient medicine to use after the treatment.  If one hasn't used this tool before, it sounds a bit far fetched.  I vouch for its efficacy when used by an experienced practitioner.  There was a period of about 3 months of intense lower back pain, having me at the chiropractor and massage therapist twice a week.  The chiropractor recommended I attend the Bio Meridian therapist.  I had no pain for at least a month afterwards!
4.  Regular visits to chiropractors and massage therapists.

I read on a web site that lower back pain is often due to muscular and connective tissue strain, and that exercises to stretch all muscles, as well as intake of K, Mg and Ca may help to reduce the pain.  It is recommended that one see one's doctor before taking K and Mg supplements, as there may be some negative side effects when dosing oneself incorrectly.
