I had a C-5 and C-6 Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion 11-15-2010

After being discharge from having a C-5 and C-6 anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion on November 15,2010.  I was transported home with a neck brace collar and was told to do a follow up with my doctor which is shedule in the begining of December 2010.  My question is, How long before I am able to return back to my Construction Labor job and how soon will I be able to drive my car and walk around.  How long do I have to stay at home in the bed and do not go out side.  I am still having soreness, in my throat, soreness in my neck.

I had the same surgery c6-7..began to hit golf balls 5 weeks post op..I am 59.
Go slowly, you can likely drive..walking is a great idea..your grafts are strong..the collar is for protection...little else..
do not strain or pick up heavey objects until cleared to do so..
PT will give you an idea about the time frame for recovery.  Good luck

It really varies by the person.  Some people are up and back to a moderate lifestyle including driving by 1 month, for me... my surgery was last April and I got very little to no relief and still have not returned to work and take meds that limit what I can do.

I would tell you that if you don't use it, you will lose it.  I couldn't use my arms for about 6 months before surgery due to the pain and haven't been able to do much since and I'm starting to experience loss of strength and ROM.  I just switched meds and this seems to help so now I have to rebuild my muscles.  Do what you can and if it hurts stop and try again later.  Try to stay active as much as you can but follow the DR's orders too.

Hope things work out for you.
