L5 Herniated

L5 Herniated

Oct 2010 I was helping someone move filing cabinets.  Two days after the move I felt a lot of pain in my right butt and hamstring.  The pain never went past the knee however my mobility has been greatly hindered.  It almost felt like i pulled my hamstring muscles or glut.  The pain was probably a 9 out of 10.  5 months later on March 2011 The pain is like a 4 but I only feel it in the right buttox and sometimes in the right hip area.  The Ortopedic diagnosed me as a Herniated L5 disc pinching my nerve causing pain from results of MRI.  However I am confused.  Since the disc has shifted, is this permanent? What causes the disc to shift back in to place? I do a lot of jogging and pushups and situps.  Should I continue these activities or is there any specific excercises I should concentrate on?    Will I no longer be able to do something like this because of this condition?  I need some opinions on this.. I am a little confused on how this cures itself and if this is permanent.

MRI RESULTS READ AS FOLLOWS

L3-L4 There is minmal disk bulge. Ther eis mild bilateral foraminal narrowing, left worse than right. There is no spinal stenosis
L4-L5 There is a mild to moderate disk bulge with a central annular tear. There is mild bilateral facet osteoarthritis. Ther is mild spinal canal stenosis with moderate right foraminial narrowing and mild to moderate left foraminal narrowing.
L5-S1: Ther is a mild disk bulge with a superimposed broad central to right foraminal disk protrusion displacing the right traversing S1 nerve root. Ther is bilateral facet osteoarthritis. There is mild spinal canal stenosis with mild left foraminal narrowing and moderal right foraminal narrowing.

Impression:

Mild lower lumbar spondylosis.
At L5-S1, a broad central to right foraminal disk protrusion displacing the right traversing S1 nerve root with mild spinal canal stenosis and moderate right foraminal narrowing.
At L4-L5, mild spinal canal stenosis with moderate right foraminial narrowing and mild to moderate left foraminal narrowing.

Any opinions? Thanks!

Hi I am not a doctor just a patient.  Has you doctor advised you?  I had a similar problem with the disc pushing on my S1 nerve root.  For 8 months I was in pain, the doctor thought it was muscular and so he tried, rest, ice/heat, then physical therapy, trigger point injections, etc, before deciding on surgery.
I was very happy with the results of the surgery, it was laprooscopic
Good luck, I am sure others will join in
