Specific and "travelling" pain in the base of the neck

For the last few years I've had recurring upper back and neck pain.  It's not constant, and may be related to stress but I don't know.  Most of the pain I feel is tolerable and localized in sides and back of the middle neck, the base of the neck and between the shoulder blades.  This pain "travels" and sometimes 'stabs' me just briefly and other times feels like chronic muscle pain.  But there is one recurring and constant area of pain and pressure.  On the left side, at the base of the neck, mid-way between the top of the shoulder and the middle of the back between the shoulder blades is an on-going pain.  It comes and goes, but always recurs in the same place when it flares up.  If someone took to finger and just pressed on that area until it got sore, that's what it feels like.
