Welcome to our wonderful world of modern medicine. Three seconds is about all I got with my doctor....
The foramen is the bony tunnel through which the nerve exits the spine. There is one on either side of the spine. When the herniation is underneath the foramen it is known as a foraminal herniation. This type of herniation usually only affects one leg. If this is a new problem remember to wait a little bit to see if it gets better without intervention.
Good luck.
