Julie I know how you feel. I had my surgery feb 4th and my birthday was feb 25th! got out of hospital on  the 9th and I know its tough but maybe you can reschedule for right after. Also get everthing in order before surgery so you aren't stressed out after as far as house stuff etc. hope everything goes well take care,

Julie
I had a two level fusion feb 4,2009, anterior approach with plastic type iserts, and four titanuim screws in each. I had my surgery at Saint Mary's in San Francisco, Ca. They used mrp protien instead of bone, because it actually fuses faster and has done very well for many. I am 8 weeks post op todaY and I feel great. Fisrt 7weeks were tough, but I,m over the hump, off all pain medication, and ready to go. The most important thign is to have the very best work on you with the most advanced proceedures. I'm happy to have all my feeling back in my leg, no more pain! thank God. The next most important thing is to be very careful post op take seriuos what they say about what not to do. I am not doing any bending, twisting, lifting etc. No house work, only light cooking. elevated laundry machine and dryer.Lots of walking, very little sitting for long periods. If you take post op serious than you will do ok and get better. Its a long road but worth it to gain your life back.

Welcome to the Back and Neck Community.  Members are here to provide assistance and support to individuals experiencing symptoms related to possible abnormal conditions of the cervical and/or lumbar spine.  Advice given is non-professional and is primarily based on personal experiences.

Having elected surgery for your low back to include fusion with cages and bone graft, I am hopeful that the surgery has a good outcome and helps reduce/alleviate the pain and other symptoms you have had to endure.
You are having a three level fusion, which is rather extensive, but not unusual if there are significant changes in all three discs.   Are they doing anterior approach as well as posterior?  Will they be using cadaver bone for your graft or are they taking bone from your hip?
In theatre (England?), you will be positioned on the operating table to allow the surgeons easy access to the operative field.  Once you are safely under general anesthesia, you won't be aware of anything until you awake in the recovery room.  It is probable that you will experience a sore throat from the breathing tube inserted by the anesthesiologist and some pain from the surgery itself.  It is most likely that you will be receiving your pain meds through intravenous access and may have a method for you to administer pain medication (within defined limits) by pushing a button --it delivers small amounts of pain med through your IV line to keep maximum pain control. PCA pump:  patient controlled anesthesia)
Length of hospitalization will vary depending on how well you respond.  They will be making efforts to get you up and sitting in a chair and walking as soon as possible to prevent potential development of blood clots.  Most likely you will be wearing some form of compression stockings on your legs to keep the circulation moving until you are more able to move about yourself.
A hospital stay of 3-4 days is not unusual, but you will need to discuss this with your surgeon in advance as all medical practitioners vary in their methods (if only slightly).
I had anterior cervical discectomy and fusion about 4 weeks ago and spent two nights in the hospital to be certain I would be able to manage on my own.  My surgery was a complete success and I hope you have equally good results.
Please post back with progress reports and any additional questions/concerns you may have.
Best wishes -----
