the 'bit'!! you are explaining is muscle.{atleast that is what I was told by a sports injury expert]. I have pain there on one side or the other, sometimes both at once, it's where muscle attached to them have contracted and not relaxed properly and so is causing these muscles to be out of relaxed state. Mine are a lot worse when I am stressed or just not getting enough sleep. I am not an expert so you should see an expert to put your mind at rest. I also have migraine type headahes, the short stabbing kind, so I guess this is connected. I find having a bath or shower so that this area is warmed-up then massaging in essential oil eg;rosemary, lavender etc, is usually a way of getting relief from the pain, especially just before bed, or once warm and massaged I keep a warmed towel around my neck. The best advice is do what ever it takes to relax [long term it has made my pain a lot less intense]. god luck
Hi Michelle
I do have that sometimes but i am fused from C3 thruT2. So dicomfort in that area will maybe a proplem for me,I cant tell tell it's been only 5 weeks since surgery. i'n the past i had a lot of problems up there. Start with your doctor for a x-ray to see there is no mass's causing any problems. then find a good chiro that specializes in the upper neck (atlas and axis). decompression of the spine can be helpful. Then if you need have occipital blocks performend by a good pain management doctor.
Hope I Help
