I'm 24 years old and have had lower back pain for 6-7 months now, like you i thought that it must be a nerve as i had no pain with movement just constant pain. I visited an oesteopath and with 3 sessions i could feel the difference. Doctors couldn't tell me what the problem was but the oesteopath knew exactly what was wrong within 1 minute. I am 21 stones so this is a factor but as long as i continue with some simple exercises tought by him i can manage the pain.

You say you have had x-rays, what about a MRI.  Simple x-rays dont show things that a MRI will show.  If you feel it is a nerve thing get your Dr. to refer you to nuerosurgeon.  My friend put on extra weight like you say you have and went to chrioprator and got straightened out  with his back.
